the actress is 20 years older than the book character

I loved the Phryne Fisher books -- I listened to them on audio-book CD.

I cannot believe how awful the series is though. I was disbelieving when I saw the lead actress appeared to be in her mid-40s when the character is the book is 28. Her Chinese lover is much more prominent in the book as well. There is no flirtation in the book with the white detective. The TV actress has no "verve" at all and that awful wig drives me absolutely nuts. I'm going back to the books.

So...it's an adaptation. It doesn't have to be a literal transcription of the books. The author has given her full approval. Quite frankly, Phryne's age in the series makes it even more exciting than if she were younger in my eyes. If she were 28, she'd still have time to "settle down" and have a family, and it could be read as her taking advantage of her youth and having adventures while she can. Here, given Phryne is say in her late 30s to mid 40s, it makes her lifestyle a very intentional decision. Watching her have the adventures she has within the life she created for herself is rebellious and thrilling in the context of that time period, and gives a depth to the character that wouldn't exist if she were in her 20s.

I can't believe some of the posts here. The actress is drop dead gorgeous with a body any 20 year old would kill for, creamy, unlined skin, and an excellent actress to boot. Such complainers! 🙄

Not familiar with the books but given they push this woman as some sort of sex siren in the show I think they could have chosen a better looking actress to play her. All the actors on the show act like they are in a community theatre production as well which doesn't help.
