the actress is 20 years older than the book character

I loved the Phryne Fisher books -- I listened to them on audio-book CD.

I cannot believe how awful the series is though. I was disbelieving when I saw the lead actress appeared to be in her mid-40s when the character is the book is 28. Her Chinese lover is much more prominent in the book as well. There is no flirtation in the book with the white detective. The TV actress has no "verve" at all and that awful wig drives me absolutely nuts. I'm going back to the books.

I liked Essie Davis very much in The Babadook.

I didn't read the books so I don't care much about the age but I agree she doesn't look young here. I think she just looks her age. At some angles she looks even older.

It is kind of obnoxious when actors don't play characters their age.

However, Essie Davis is a wonderful actress. She brought out the sass and charm out of Miss Fisher's character without going overboard.

Essie Davis may also be influential and wanted the role more than other actresses and had the power to secure the role.

Given her character is supposed to be around 30, age is the only thing that is somewhat discordant with Essie's portrayal, but her portrayal is fun to watch.

I do think the makeup department tries really hard to hide her lines and powders her to oblivion. Nothing is more aging than desperately holding on to youth.

So? 😒

I don't know why people expect that a show follow everything about a book down to the last detail.

For the episodes that were based on a book, do you follow along with the book to make sure they say all the lines word for word too???

This is years late, but I'm new to IMDb. That's not a wig. Essie Davis's own hair is so thick and was so long that they couldn't find any wigs that worked. From what I remember reading, she finally just said "Oh, go ahead and cut and dye my hair into the style we need. I'll grow it out when filming is finished." I can see why, if you look at pictures of her, there is no way all that lovely hair would fit under any wig cut in a 20s bob. Absolutely no way. What you didn't like is likely the style itself with the hair products that give it the 20s shine.

To the Op:

Who even cares about her age? I rarely see these type of complaints about a male actor's age like this, anyway. It comes from this stupid outdated sexist idea that women are just supposed to automatically become undesirable and disappear after 40, or some BS like that. Life dosen't end after 40, which is what some young folks seem to think. Some of us women over 40 still not only look good and take good care of ourselves, but we still check out young dudes, especially if they look good. Sexual desire dosen't just automatically stop at 40 for women---our sexual peak is supposed to be around that age frame, anyway.

Also, so what if she was young in the books? Who cares? That's what acting is all about---making you believe in a character, regardless of age. I just saw my first episode the other night, and thought it was okay----(kind of refreshing seeing a PBS drama that's set in Australia instead of England for once, and I like the accents anyway.)

This seems to be a main concern over the show and really trivial. As you said, no one would bat an eye if it were an older male playing a well younger character. Essie looks great for her age and plays the part perfectly. Her age doesn't bother me.

People always need something to whine about.

She's too old and I don't like it. She's off putting. It's a shame I love the costumes and music.

Is the character in the SHOW supposed to be 28, though? I don't think they've ever mentioned her age. I assumed, based on the actress's appearance and the story, that she was probably around mid-30s in season 1. The actress was 40-41 when they were filming that season which would be no big deal (heck...40 year olds play teenagers sometimes, and occasionally, even that is believable). The show does not have to be the same as the books. As you've pointed out with the love interests. It's not "wrong" for the show to have her flirt/date Jack instead of the Chinese guy.

She talks at length about "the war" which happened between 1914-1918. And the first season appears to be set around 1928. If she was an adult for the entire war, that would make her at least 32, maybe older. Her stories of the war don't seem like the stories of a 14 year old or even necessarily an 18 year old.

The only other thing I can think that would give a definitive age is when Jane died. Phryne looked to be 10-12 at the time, but I can't remember if they gave a year for that.

On another note, Mac is supposed to be "an old friend" and so I assumed they were supposed to be the same age. But Mac looks older, in her 40s maybe. She's well-established as a doctor too which would point to being somewhat older So perhaps Phryne is supposed to be older in the show too.
