A well-made movie

With a stellar cast, great production values, and a tense plot that kept the interest level high. Unlike the many reviews on IMDB that said the romantic subplot of two of the British officers being smitten with Jean (Kelly Macdonald) was unnecessary and brought the film down, I thought it gave the movie an added bonus of humanity.

I rate it at 7.5 stars.

Yeah it's actually pretty good. Solid wartime spy thriller.

Overall pretty good, but the scene of the guy rubbing off the other guys' knob on the park bench was completely unnecessary. It's Netflix, however, so something along those lines was expected.

reply

Yeah what the fvck was that. It felt way outta place for this type of movie.

I think it had to do with showing that spies have to do and say things that may be quite contrary to their personal views, attitudes and (even sexual) preferences in order to accomplish a mission.

Sometimes they get to make out with hot chicks outside of doors and sometimes they have to do less savory or enjoyable things -- all for "King and Country" (as James Bond says in "Thunderball").

Yeah, I have to agree with that.

Is your “it’s Netflix” comment supposed to mean that the reason why the scene was included was to fulfill a gay “quota” of sorts? If so, I have to disagree. I think if that were the case it would have been a scene that reflected positively on the gay character, not negatively.

The same guy was also with the girl in the hallway in an embrace listening to the phone conversation. They were trying to say this particular agent would go to any lengths to get info and that’s why they used him. How far do agents have to go? It surprised me at first but then bravo for acknowledging not everything is as easy as a James Bond girl. And the agent did so without any emotional involvement. He was bored with both the girl and the guy.

The movie makes you want to read the actual historical event. Fact vs. Fiction. That part is eye opening. There is some conjecture that the body of the Welshman was not used because of his teeth and liver and that a recently drowned shipman from the Dasher was used instead. Also Ewen Montagu wrote a book which was made into a movie called The Man Who Never Was. I recalled seeing this 50s British movie and it is very good also. What’s next may be a spoiler. …..The fiction part of this movie was there was no love affair with Jean and Ewen and there was no good German who found her photo and threatened her.

While it was well made, it took many liberties with the truth as compared to the book of the same name. They even changed some events that would have made for a more exciting film.

Here is a comparison between the book and the film. http://thatwasnotinthebook.com/diff/operation-mincemeat/0#diffPage
