General audiences aren't going to like this

This is a great movie and perhaps the best Batman movie, but people expecting a traditional superhero movie are going to be disappointed. There is action, but the movie is more of a detective mystery/film noir and very different from the other Batman movies. Very dark and at points disturbing with how creepy and sadistic The Riddler was. Very close to this being an R rating and probably would've if there had been more blood. There's a lot of story involving conspiray and politics in this one too and at 3 hours might be too much for some people.

Even though I loved this movie, I won't be surprised if the audience reception is mixed and it ends up underperforming at the box office.

I haven't seen the film yet but this is exactly what I expected (and hoped) the film would be so thank you for your review.

I know audience reaction to Matt Reeves' last film 'War for the Planet of the Apes' was more mixed as they were expecting an all out war film with lots of action and explosions and not the slow, bleak film that we got (I loved it.) It did well at the box office but made around $220 million less than 'Dawn' did.

The fact that this is a dark and gritty detective noir film is exactly what I wanted from a new Batman film and I just hope it at least does well enough to get a sequel and hopefully a trilogy.

reply

I saw it and loved every moment of it. I know what you mean though it's not an action centered film. I just hope it does well enough to get a sequel. This has been my favorite comic book film in years. I prefer the slow and dark to the marvel formula.

reply

I believe its a trilogy, looking forward to seeing it.

reply

I'm so down for a trilogy. Matt Reeves is a great director.

reply

Agreed , so glad the dceu if finished and we get movies like this

reply

They set it up for a sequel at the end so I'm sure we'll get a sequel

The Nolan films weren’t very action-oriented. I haven’t seen this one yet but would you say the Nolan movies had more action?

reply

It depends. This follows more along the lines of the dark knight rises. However I always felt the action in the Nolan films was sub par. In particular the fights. The other set pieces were very solid. Nolan's vehicle chases and use of practical effects are great I just felt his combat was a bit sub par. This movie I think utilizes fights way better and has great use of practicals as well. So while the action is spaced out I feel it has better action if that makes sense.

reply

Yeah, I get it. Thanks.

reply

This one had slightly more action than the Nolan films. Fight scenes were more brutal

reply

Oh...you made this thread because you've actually seen it. This is great news then! A mystery is exactly what I was hoping for, and I was hoping that it wasn't all just bullshit to hype the movie to make it seem different.

reply

Yeah. Went to the fans first event last night in IMAX. Yeah no BS, they go all out on making this a real Batman movie in the vein of the earlier comics. It's the most true to the comics than any Batman movie before in style, but I also know that won't be what all audiences want or are expecting.

reply

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I just hope it gets money. Come on I want more of this universe it's way good!

reply

Joker managed to make $1 billion, and that had no action in it. The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises made over $900 million each, both were relatively slow-paced with less action when compared to your average superhero movie. I think The Batman could do well. The deciding factor will be the 3-hour runtime, which would be acceptable if this was Pattinson's third movie and they were going for an epic finale like with Dark Knight Rises.

reply

It might even do well with gasp an ethnic Catwoman! This would make your skin crawl lol.

reply

"It might even do well with gasp an ethnic Catwoman!"

What does that even mean???

We are ALL ethnic, lol

reply

Joker was also a movie that had a ton of hype and controversy behind it, was rated R, and was about one of the most popular comic book villians of all time. I think a lot of people also went to see it because of all the controversy surronding it at the time.

reply

To be fair, an R-rating is usually detrimental for a film's box office prospects rather than a positive.

reply

Wasn't the case for Joker though.

Apparently though reading about production, Warner Bros gave Matt Reves most of the creative control, but the one thing they said is that it had to be a PG-13 film.

reply

It would be interesting to know how well Joker would've done if it had been PG-13.
