Alien series: Best to worst now..

Imo

Classic:
Alien/Aliens - nothing between them (like T1/2 but 1 is the best imo)

Good:
Covenant - gets a bad rap but I liked it/easy 3rd best imo, its Ridleys return to full on Alien, felt like a truly adult film with lofty arty poetic stuff of Blade Runner (David going all Roy Batty), lots of Giger, Hammer, Frankenstein, Roman imagery, Wagner, the killer ending. but obviously some bad stuff in it like:
Prometheus - disappointing but its still Ridley, still a 2001 meets Alien scifi epic.
Alien3 - yeah its a huge let down after Aliens but its still the trilogy's doomed end, with 'cyberpunk' aesthetic in a Dante's Inferno like setting, and its Fincher.
Romulus - like an Alien 'Rogue 1' (or if they'd made an 'Alien 2' in early 80s before Cameron's Aliens) and an obviously mash of Alien/s (with bit of Prometheus/Covenant/Resurrection) - might go higher for me as time goes on (initially placed it above A3, but idk seems too much to put it above the OG trilogy end with Ripley)

Ok:
Resurrection - hated this when it came out, esp the off kilter humour. caught some the other night on TV , there's some cool 'Alien/s' stuff in it but not enough to overcome that disgusted disappointed feeling i had seeing it late 97
AvP - talking of mash of Alien/s (and pre Prometheus), its bad (and setting it on earth was unforgivable). but still kind of fun/well made.

Dire:
AvP:R - f'kin disgrace

That's where I'd rank them as well, just flip Prometheus and Covenant. I wouldn't include the AvP movies, though. They don't count.

Romulus, like Prometheus and Covenant, had some glaring flaws that kept it from being close to Alien/Aliens level. Frustrating movies.

NICE, pretty much the same except I'd flip 4 & 5.

alien 5/5 - that chest-burster scene freaking me out when i watched it on midnight tv as a 12yr old is maybe my favorite movie memory.

aliens 5/5- still great, but doesn't quite hold up as well as the original model

alien3 3.5/5 a failure, but there are things to admire about it for sure

romulus - 3 i found it mostly dull. as far as new takes on a classic franchise, i liked his evil dead movie a lot more. & nothing in ed2013 made me cringe like the way that one line was recycled in romulus.

covenant - 3 competent horror/sci fi.

prometheus 2.5 - a film i hate yet one that i find compulsively rewatchable. there are some things that bug me less now. i used to have a real problem with the creationist/chariots of the gods premise. i don't care about that now. but it's still such a clunky, silly movie.

resurrection 1 - the worst of the bunch. a movie almost completely without redeeming qualities.

avp & avp r - it's been too long, can't remember them well enough to rate. but i remember avp #1 being goofy fun.

Or maybe someone has a different opinion than you? Aliens is overrated.

i think Alien 3 is vastly underrated

my rank is:
the original trilogy = pretty cool. it's a tragic tale, love it or hated it felt like a natural conclusion.

just saw romulus... meh but in comparison to the rest........
i'd say maybe i can rewatch AvP1
and perhaps the '97 crap

everything else is rated last

Yes, I think in time (it's already started...) Fincher's Alien 3, despite its problems, will be recognised as the great film that it is. And I'm not even speaking of the 'Assembly Cut', which does nothing for me, but the actual theatrical cut.

reply

It's been over 30 years, bro - you're really playing the long-game with this prediction, eh.

Disappointment is in store if you think people are magically going to start liking the theatrical cut en masse. Time is not going to resolve its flaws.
