Why not have a female lead?
Tomb Raider had a female lead and that worked.
Yes, Tomb Raider is (often) great. Certainly Lara is.
Now, in the name of equality and stupidity, let's replace that female lead, which has been done waaaay more times than a male lead in GTA, with a guy.

Tomb Raider was a fantasy-platformer-shooter game akin to Indiana Jones.
GTA has always satirised the American crime-thriller, and Western culture in general. Usually themed around male criminals, since those are mostly who are the ones who make the news for violent crimes.
A female lead doesn't really make sense to the story unless she was a cop.
Trailer looks great! I already like her. A couple is a cool idea.
My only criticism is the Florida setting. Blech! I wish it were New York City again, several cities like in GTA San Andreas or foreign like traveling among London, Paris and Venice.
Look, GTA is supposedly gritty ad realistic and violent.
And based on mafia/ crime stories like goodfellas or scarface or sopranos etc. which are stricly MALE settings.
NOT some woke dumpster fire from this past decade.
The last Far Cry had this same stupid woke idea, to be able to pick Dani as both female or male, and THAT is its weakest point, because the story never focuses on personal stuff like a love interest or similar scenarios because it is neutralized by its unisex premise.

GTA didn't change anything. Each game has always had a different protagonist(s), location and theme instead of repeating the same thing. What makes GTA interesting is the variety of characters: Italian; Russian; African-American with completely different lifestyles.
GTA 5 has three male protagonists: black; white (rich) and redneck. GTA 6 will have two, a romantic couple. The woman is Hispanic. I'm not sure about her boyfriend.
There's no real negative reaction. 114 million views in 2 days with 9.6 million thumbs-up. Majority are hyped!

I would distinguish that from a man or woman who has no interest in being in a relationship. These people are happy to be alone. They may have been in a relationship, but are now divorced or widowed and prefer their independence. Or they may want to concentrate on a career, their children or other aspect of life.
I know both. I usually hear single men complain about not being able to find a girlfriend. I usually hear single women saying they're happy alone. Huge difference!
