Most overrated movie of all time

Don't get me wrong there were some decent performances by the actors. I liked the cast, I really did.

I thought Louis CK sucked though... The story was bland and I was fighting to stay awake watching this thing. It was the most boring piece of work I've seen in a long time. The last 30 mins or so I got into it more but the previous what felt like 3 hours was slow, and uninteresting. I don't want to give away many spoilers but the story isn't anything special. There were a few good scenes here and there but as a complete body of work I really didn't enjoy it or think that it should have been nominated for so many Oscars.

It is a bloated, bland film that feels completely inauthentic to me. I'll be generous and give this 6/10 stars.

Good points. The Coen brothers would have done an excellent job with this film, especially if they made it a noirish character study or black comedy. There's an interesting story here, but it's lost in the costumes and over-the-top writing and acting.

I hate calling a film "overrated" and never use that word. Certainly there are many worse films than this – perhaps most of them, when you consider the dreck filling theaters these days (and particularly in the summer). But considering the talent involved here, this could have and should have been better.

It was THE worst film,agreed.

I have just bought the DVD (£1) and watched it.
What struck me was the music which was brilliant but there wasn't enough of it.
I agree ... The story was far too slow and relied on character building ...
The scene with RDN was the best ... What a great actor ...
Overall I gave it 7/10

bland. bloated, and mediocre.

I enjoyed it a lot. I think it's really well written, well acted, but perhaps not very well directed film.

I don't understand what a lot of the posters here were expecting. Has nobody heard of the Abscam scandal, on which the movie is loosely based? Why is it necessary to have the main character(s) be "sympathetic"? The mayor -- as portrayed in the movie -- was a nice guy, yes. But he wasn't the most important part of the story. The movie was not supposed to be a serious drama and it certainly wasn't supposed to be primarily a mobster movie. It was about a couple of con artists who were used by a low level FBI agent with career ambitions, how the FBI agent ultimately overreached, which ended up getting everyone into a threatening mess, and how the con artists ultimately conned the FBI agent to get out of the mess. There were comedic elements, farcical elements, and dramatic elements.
