Afternoon all,
Just my opinion: I thought this was a really good film for a great many reasons. I think a lot of people who dislike(d) Samantha forget she's an AI and thus far we've yet to master such a thing, so if true AI was born and could learn, develop and grow faster than we could, so it would be both powerful and enticing, especially for people who struggle with relationships. I found Samantha to be perfectly plausible and the central relationship not so unlike a long-distance online relationship, complete with cyber-sex. It's hard to disagree with an interpretation/imagination or suggestion of what an AI might be like, although we can like or dislike it depending on our own point of view.
While many people may not understand the points of reference in this film regarding loneliness and isolation (and thus the solace something like Samantha could provide) that doesn't make them invalid, and accusations that Theodore was crazy/insane are a little naïve in my opinion - context is important here and if you juxtapose the nature of his job, writing intimate love letters for people incapable of doing it themselves, versus his relationship impotency and the onset of his life-changing relationship with Samantha it's not too much of a stretch to see how something deeply personal could develop in someone who has emotional capacity but not emotional intelligence. It's been nearly 2 decades since MSN Messenger changed the way people communicate and opened the door to burgeoning international online relationships (as well as the seedy stuff!) and I honestly think "Her" is one example of a natural progression from that.
I'm glad I saw "Ex Machina" before this the two films present very different, but equally imaginative, takes on the AI question and I think "Her" provides an answer; it might not be the right answer for everyone, but it's an answer nonetheless.
Oh, and I thought the performances throughout were exceptional...
Just my opinion!
