Absolutely HATED IT!!! Love to hear other opinions....

Hello, Im interested in seeing if Im in the minority or majority here. The only way I can describe this movie is BIZARRE. If the coming future entails humans falling in love with and having simulated sex with what looks like a cellphone - then we are seriously in trouble. He has sex with it, he takes it on vacation, he doubledates with it. INSANITY!!! I personally received no entertainment value whatsoever with this film. As a matter of fact, i found myself cringing every 5 minutes or so. ANyway - I think Ive clearly stated my take. Love to hear some others.....

I thought I would really like this movie.
I stopped watching after 45 mins, depressing and very boring.
But then again, this come from a person who also absolutely hated, and was completely bored by, THe Godfather, so maybe it's me.

Hated it. The story was b.o.r.i.n.g. I fast-forwarded through most of it after sitting through the first 30 minutes. I had to see why his marriage failed. Don't know why I even cared. He was weird. Great actors though.

I was hoping it was somewhat similar to Lars and the Real Girl. That was a great movie.

Basically feel like Spike re-did "Being John Malkovich".

You can hear 4 critics' reviews of Her all at once. 4 for the price of 1. Here's a link to the "What The Flick?!" review of Her on YouTube:

All 4 regular critics were there for this review, and they all liked the movie.

Afternoon all,

Just my opinion: I thought this was a really good film for a great many reasons. I think a lot of people who dislike(d) Samantha forget she's an AI and thus far we've yet to master such a thing, so if true AI was born and could learn, develop and grow faster than we could, so it would be both powerful and enticing, especially for people who struggle with relationships. I found Samantha to be perfectly plausible and the central relationship not so unlike a long-distance online relationship, complete with cyber-sex. It's hard to disagree with an interpretation/imagination or suggestion of what an AI might be like, although we can like or dislike it depending on our own point of view.

While many people may not understand the points of reference in this film regarding loneliness and isolation (and thus the solace something like Samantha could provide) that doesn't make them invalid, and accusations that Theodore was crazy/insane are a little naïve in my opinion - context is important here and if you juxtapose the nature of his job, writing intimate love letters for people incapable of doing it themselves, versus his relationship impotency and the onset of his life-changing relationship with Samantha it's not too much of a stretch to see how something deeply personal could develop in someone who has emotional capacity but not emotional intelligence. It's been nearly 2 decades since MSN Messenger changed the way people communicate and opened the door to burgeoning international online relationships (as well as the seedy stuff!) and I honestly think "Her" is one example of a natural progression from that.

I'm glad I saw "Ex Machina" before this the two films present very different, but equally imaginative, takes on the AI question and I think "Her" provides an answer; it might not be the right answer for everyone, but it's an answer nonetheless.

Oh, and I thought the performances throughout were exceptional...

Just my opinion!

It basically came across as a comedy to me (albeit unintentional). From the Tom Selleck turned anorexic librarian lookalike Theodore, to the whining harpy-in-a-cellphone-Samantha - it had me in stitches. When Theodore (with his pants pulled up to his armpits) tremblingly asked Samantha how many guys she was dating as well as him and she said "641" I almost fell off the sofa laughing. She could have added that they all had 12 inch cyber schlongs and it couldn't have been more ludicrous.

And the sex scenes were comic genius - a nerd artificially aroused by a silicone implant with no breasts (to all intents and purposes), an impossibly drippy geek getting off on a laptop dance. Ridiculous!!

If you watch it as a comedy though it really is rather good. I advise anyone who hasn't seen it to sit down with a few mates, some beer and some popcorn and hoot and holler from beginning to end. Do this at home though, as I nearly got thrown out of the cinema on its first release, even though there was no beer.

Hello dalestyles - Im the guy that started this thread - probably over a year ago now. I took a couple of looks at "Her" at that time just to make sure of how I felt - and I had no doubt - its just bad beyond belief! ANyway - Im cruising movie channels the other day and it turns out "Her' was on - HBO I think. I said to myself - well, Ill watch it for a few - been over a year, maybe I changed my mind. I only had to watch the one scene of Joaquin's pathetic character (I dont remember his name) being led to that food vendor while dancing around as Samantha leads the way. That was enough for me! I said to myself - this is even worse than I thought it was! HOwever, after reading your post - I think you may be onto something - if you went into "Her" with a concsious mindframe that its a comedy - well, if you looked at it that way - I could see where it would be enjoyable, ha ah aha hhaa. So, that was an excellent post dalestyles and I tend to agree with you. Thanks for commenting on my thread.

I wonder if this movie is meant to make fun of us the audience. To me it looks like its a clearly made up AI from a director that know very little about AI.. But maybe I'm wrong and his intentions are this:

Its all irony to make fun of us for example when we think Siri is smart cause she understand a sentence. More intelligent versions of Siri is on the way, versions that can much better understand what you want and mimic real life. Probably we will mimic a real human in sound soon. And we human always want to se life in everything, if we see a couple of dots in a circle its eyes on a face.

To make real AI with feelings is 2001 movie technology (hal) and its nearly touching that some people honestly believes that we are so far in to the future just because we have google maps that can tell us the nearest restaurant from a voice that sound like Hawkings. The future in "her" doesn't seem to different in anything else except this AI OS. But this AI is giant leap that would be in level with space travel to Mars on daily bases for tourists or more.

Hey, dumbass, bizarre is not bad. Take that stick out of your ass and stop hating what deviates from what is "normal". Your type makes me sick.

Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime.

reply

Yeah, your type makes me sick as well. People that are obviously lacking of any kind of linguistic skills. I appreciate intelligent comments but that may be asking too much of you. Wondering if your mathematical skills are as weak as your language skills? If you can count - to which I have my doubts - you'll find the majority of people who have commented on this thread also hated the film.

reply

My linguistic skills are excellent, so I'm not sure what you're crying about, but I have no problem with those who don't care for this film, but anyone who dislikes something because it's "bizarre" is not exactly a fan of film. Go ahead and continue eating your Applebee's and watching Monday Night Football, I'll be over here broadening my horizons, watching films that push the boundaries and trying a new restaurant around the corner.

Having an opinion can save your life. Just ask Marvin.

reply

I don't think that he meant that the initial premise of the movie was bizarre, which it is. This seems to be the sort of a linguistic barrier you can't cross in order to actually discuss how the movie turned out.
I believe that most people who say this movie is "bizarre"" see a dreadfully crude, one-dimensional approach to a massively advanced concept such as the AI in some kind of a pseudo-eloquent allegory for romantic relationship, with the main character too disinclined to discover any other function of the AI, or to venture into any other thing throughout the entire movie, for that matter.
Was the character written completely differently, along with the AI, I could maybe see that working out better, but frankly the whole script is some sort of a juvenile, stylized adventure into techno-dereism. Clearly too overconfident in establishing the far-off, axiomatic AI and the narrow and casual main character who's only seeking it's courtship (I'm not even gonna mention other humans here) as the sine qua nons of it's "bizarreness".

reply

Now that was an intelligent response!! Great take and very interesting. Thank you Bwana
