Any other movies with a similar atmosphere?

I actually really, really enjoyed this movie. I felt the ending was abit cheap, and also the death of Gale was abit cheap, too, but I definitely loved about 3/4 of the film. The filming, the atmosphere was just fantastic and I'd love to see another one like it. Any good recommendations?

I should also say that I am mostly a fan of newer horror, not too big on anything before 2000ish (not to say I don't enjoy it, it's just not what I am after here).

Thanks alot in advance, cheers!

This movie is extremely close to A Serbian Film.

It actually shares quite a bit. A man who works an immoral profession that he hasn't done for some time. But due to money issues, and an old friend from the profession, he's hired on for one last job. It's an "easy" job sure to bring all the money he needs. He takes this job to save his wife and young son. In both cases, the wives know what profession her husband is in and supports him in taking this one last job. The job (which he doesn't understand) continually throws him down the dark rabbit hole, getting increasingly disturbing as his true dark side take hold. The profession ultimately consumes him and his family as a result. Same basic story. Not just because the endings are the same.

Yeah I can agree with you on that :-)

Bravo! Well said. A Serbian Film was the very first thing I was thinking.

I agree. Other than the extreme imagery in ASF and the profession there are a lot of similarities. Quite often this comes up in conversation when discussing either film with friends and fellow horror fans.

I agree with "divisionbell-2". The movie "A Serbian Film" is really close to it although its probably one of the most disturbing movies of all time.

Some titles that u might like from the "newer horror genre" and come close to this, are:

1. The house of the devil
2. Babysitter Wanted

Not top of the pops but enjoyable. :)

Thanks for the saying of Babysitter Wanted! Always see stuff listed in these types of threads that I have already seen, not seen this one yet, will check it out. Cheers!

The low budget Australian flick, The Horseman (2008) is like this film (I say like this, it's light years ahead of this film in terms of realism and genuine emotion) at least up until the point it springs that cheesy Satan/Pagan bullsh!t on you at the end.

The overall atmosphere and slow burning tension reminded me of the British revenge flick Dead Man's Shoes by Shane Meadows.

In terms of pure 'atmosphere' the film was heavily influenced by the works of David Lynch. So I'd recommend such films as Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks (TV Series), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Wild at Heart. All magnificent and deeply unsettling.

Other films worth watching:

The Shining
Angel Heart
Irreversible
The Machinist

A lot of these films were made before 2000 by the way, I don't quite know what you have against older horror films. Most of the greatest horror films of all time are pre-2000.

I'd say it has a atmosphere similar to 7 Days, more a long the lines of a revenge plot. Also, I Saw the Devil.

The height of occult horror was in the 70s and the 80s, though. You're dismissing the best decades for this type of film. :)
