Kevin in debt, flopping in theaters

I think there's just no real enthusiasm to watch movies in theaters anymore. Only rare gems will drive people to the seats (Deadpool 3) or bankable kid shows (Despicable Me 4/Inside Out 2/etc.) or some special gem movie by A24 studio. Most can be streamed these days so people don't bother to pay exorbitant amounts for a theater ticket. That or maybe this wasn't the right time for a Western to be shown during the summer (probably winter fits better).

Oppenheimer just made almost a billion dollars, and a year before that Top Gun: Maverick made 1.5x that, so people will still turn out for the right projects.

Audiences SHOULD be turning out for this one. I was there on Saturday so I can at least say that it's not my fault.

reply

Why they SHOULD? Trailer looks very boring.

reply

Do you say that because you think all westerns look boring?

reply

Nolan has a rabid fanbase though

If he takes a dump and films it for 3 hours, it will get a billion views

reply

What happened with Tenet?

reply

rabid fanbase got vaccinated

reply

LOL

Well that's on them. NoVax crew here. (And I actually did go see Tenet.)

If you remember back in 1990, Dances With Wolves had very weak opening weekend as well, but strong word of mouth and Oscar buzz made it a hugely successful box office surprise hit. If I'm not mistaken, it ended up becoming the highest grossing historical western of all time. A similar thing could happen with Horizon: Chapter 1 or one (or all) of the other 3 chapters. I'm curious to see what happens with this saga in terms box office and Oscars when it's all said and done.

3 hours each so 12 hours, not 57... oO

Barebenheimer because of iconic barbie for girls while Oppenheimer because of Nolan along with word of mouth and intrigue. Maverick was a one hit wonder due to COVID, nostalgia, patriotism, and saving Hollywood by putting butts in seats again.

One problem Part I potentially having legs and making money over a long period of time is that Part II is being released just six weeks later.

I suppose though, it's possible that they could both be in the theater at the same time. That would be interesting. Maybe the existence of Part II would make people interested in seeing Part I.

reply

Sadly I wasn't much of a movie goer back then unlike now. I do remember seeing Jurassic Park in the theaters though.

reply

It's a pretty weak summer lineup. It wouldn't surprise me if not a single film cracks 500 million. Most summers have at least one massive hit.

That might help Horizon have a long run at theaters.

reply

have you not seen the numbers for Inside Out 2, broski?

reply

Whoa, pretty big oversight.

Maybe I should have said no massive hit going forward. I knew Inside Out 2 did well, but not that well.

Just shows that people will get out to see movies on the big screen if you give them something they want to see.

Dances came out in theaters in November and I saw it in May. It played forever.

reply

This has no chance whatsoever at being profitable. Or winning any awards. Or even the 4 parts being completed. Dances With Wolves, it is not.

reply

[deleted]

You dont see this grossing $750 million ?

reply

[deleted]

It probably won't even hit $200m with all 4 movies out.

reply

I could see Kevin revisiting some of his old hits in an attempt to rejuvenate his movie career after Horizon..

So maybe Robin Hood 2 (if he can obtain the necessary rights which I'm sure he'd be able to), Field of Dreams 2, Dances With Wolves 2 (but he's probably done with Westerns after Horizon), and a WaterWorld stream series is in production so he'll probably feature in some way (probably in that lost legacy way a'la Luke, Deckard)

reply

[deleted]

ya, Waterworld was such a flop 30 years later it's still the most popular attraction at Universal Hollywood

reply

[deleted]

but you have a admit he's a handsome man nearing 70

reply

Kevin Costner is basically male version on Jennifer Lopez. He still thinks he is relevant and popular and that people want to watch their old asses in anything. They don't. Not in anything that requires to pay money.

Yellowstone was success because of it's subject. Not Costner. His character could be played by any other older actor. But he thought its because of him and there are fans who will show up to his stupid western or other projects. Now faces reality.

I'd like to see modern take on The Battle of Bunker Hill. I feel like Spielberg would have crushed this even 10 yrs ago but I don't trust him to do it these days. Someone of his caliber at the top of their game.

reply

[deleted]

Westerns are boring and always the same. That's why no one watches them.

reply

[deleted]

Dances with Wolves would flop coming these days.

reply

Fast & Furious Western is needed :P

reply

exactly, Unforgiven is the same as Tombstone, The Quick And The Dead is the same as Silverado, A Fistful Of Dollars is the same As Django,
HWood should have retired the western before they made the same thing again

reply

May I respectfully ask your age?

reply

No. But I was always bored with Westerns. And could never understood Hollywood obsession with them. And people don't care that much too. Since so many of them flop.

Third movie of Back to the Future was least interesting because it was set during Western Times. It made the least money.

They are always the same pretty much. They build one small fake street for movie. With 10 houses and 1 tavern. Where most of the things happen. Then there are women in the background. Sheriff. Bad guys who come to town and are maniacs and shoot everyone for no reason. Then they chase each other.

Hollywood likes romantics of it. But it's extremely boring for viewers. And they never show up in masses.

reply

Fair enough. So, just to get a better understanding of where you’re coming from, what are some of your favorite films?

reply

Costner should have cast Jeffrey Bridgekowski as the archenemy in this series. Even have Sam Elliot costar as a baddie, playing against type.

reply

Movies coming to streaming has something to do with the box office decline, but I think there's also been a decline in movies that appeal to people.

Yeah, anti-woke, alt-right talking points, incels and all that, but there is something to point that most people don't like the current approach to certain kinds of movies. They don't want to see a broken down, pathetic Indiana Jones get punched out by a scrawny Phoebe Waller-Bridge in his last movie. Some say that movies like this are being made because it's what modern audiences want, but I think perhaps its more what they think modern audiences SHOULD want to see.
