Would it have seen the same success 4 years ago?

This year has a significant shortage of movies in theaters. Roughly 30% fewer than 4 years ago, a trickle down result of the pandemic. While I really enjoyed this movie in the theater, I don't feel it's particularly earth shattering to the degree of it's success. Would it have been recieved so well against more and BETTER competition (prett crappy year for most of the other blockbusters we did get), or is it just this successful for a lack of options?

I think it would have done great based on preexisting fan base, Tom doing stunts in other films, and its a decent action, summer, fun, movie as is. Just my unproveable opinion.

reply

There is no doubt Tom has always been great at putting butts in theater seats.

reply

Would have done well but not as well.

reply

Oh, yes. No pandemic. I think it would have done extremely well.

I'm a little not too pleased with the few returning characters, they should have had included a few more. ✌

reply

I'm betting they wanted to focus on upcoming films, so make the youngsters the stars.

reply

Oh, definitely. I hope so with Glen Powell's character Hangman. I wanted Adrian Pasdar to be in this one, always liked him.

reply

It was always gonna do good in this superhero saturated market. People are hungry for real movies.

reply

I suspect superhero movies will be very rare within 4 years. That bubble has almost burst.

reply

I wish I could believe that. I feel like superhero fan base will just go see anything their characters are in.

Numbers are down on almost all comic book movies, with a couple exceptions. I'm also a comic book guy, and in many groups, and most of us are starting to tire of the mass produced, but low quality offerings of late.

cool. it was a GREAT run! im not a fan, but I respect their existence and audience. maybe there will be more interest in other film block busters now, like this one.

reply

I WAS a fan, but mostly am indifferent at this point. Hollywood always has had it's trends. I'm excited to see what's next. Time to move on. I actually think we will see a lot of try to capture what Maverick did. I expect the pure action genre is due for a comeback.

I just picked up the reprint of Batman by Sale and Loeb. Yeah buddy!

reply

I've had that omnibus for a while, but it's still in the shrink wrap, like so many of my books. Never enough time.

reply

It definitely would have because I think there's been very little big-budget modern air combat movies since the rush of Top Gun and the immediate imitators that were made, and we knew what to expect with another Top Gun movie: impressive flying sequences, lots of ridiculous dialogue, romance, cool cars and bikes, the beach scene and Tom Cruise. Plus we wanted to see what happened to very memorable characters like Ice Man and how Mav dealt with what happened with Goose, etc.

So many things that we wanted to see more of...

I'm sure we will get more.
