How would Goose's son be in flight school???

The last Top gun was 36 years ago. Unless they are setting this five years in the past, he would be significantly too old to realistically be a new fighter pilot.

Then again, Tom Cruise's old ass definitely wouldn't be flying jets either.

Is Goose's son a new pilot, entering advanced flight training or another program like Mitchell did when he was assigned to the Fighter Weapons School?

A person needs to be no more than 32 years old to enter initial flight training.

reply

Grandson of Goose?

I don’t know. If I ever get to see it I’ll just enjoy it for what it is. Although I know it won’t match the original.

reply

Looks like you already found a plot hole. Its never good if we know of plot holes prior to the films release

reply

The good news is that Rooster is in fact not in flight school, but already a Top Gun graduate at the time of the movie.

They cleverly avoided a plot hole here in this, the only perfect and plot hole free movie in history.

reply

Thats good. This movie is reminding me of Jason X and not because of the plot obviously, but because that movie was also well written and was a plot hole free movie

reply

The reason they give for needing pilots instead of drones is very hand-wavy... but it still works.

reply

Tom Cruise probably wouldn't make the height requirement for a Navy pilot.

reply

The original film is from 1986. Goose's son was supposed to be four so he would have been born in 1982. Maverick was filmed in 2019 which would have made Rooster 37. He was already an experienced pilot who had been in the navy for some time.

*** SPOILERS ***

The conflict that existed between Rooster and Maverick is because Rooster's mom was against her son becoming a navy pilot so Maverick pulled Rooster's application which set his career back four years as said in the movie.

The conflict that existed between Rooster and Maverick is because Goose's widow was against her son becoming a navy pilot so Maverick pulled Rooster's application which set his career back four years as said in the movie.

Maverick then admitted that truthfully he didn't think Rooster was ready.

And it's odd that you phrase this as Goose's widow rather than Rooster's mother.

But he's not a new fighter pilot. He's new to Top Gun, sure, but Top Gun is elite training for fighter pilots who are already experienced.

I don't think it was Rooster's first time at Top Gun. In fact, I suspect they were all graduates.

This was a caper film; they were training at Top Gun for a specific mission, not just to be the best of the best in general

Filmed in 2018: Rooster is an experienced fighter pilot, approx 33 years old. Rooster is such an outstanding pilot he's been selected for Top Gun.

reply

He'd be a little bit older. He was already about four in the first movie.
