My god, their music sucked
Their songs sound like a national anthem, absolutely awful.
shareWho are your favourite band?
shareIf all you know is We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions I can see how you arrive at that.
Like the other poster asked...please share with us who some of your favorite artists are.
We'll patiently wait.
Those songs are great, unforgettable ROCK anthems. There's a reason you still here them played forty years later.
shareI agree...look at my screen-name!
I'm just conceding that I can understand why the OP thinks this about Queen if those two tracks are all he knows and assumes all of their music sounds like that.
Yes, there is a tremendous variety to their music. If you don't like those two songs, give some of the others a listen.
shareKiller Queen is my shit!
shareAbsolutely CLASSIC songs man!
shareWe Are The Champions was named The World’s Favorite Song a couple years ago. It, Rock You and Another One Bites The Dust are played at virtually every sporting event on earth—through a public address system, the world’s shittiest loudspeaker system! Beethoven‘s 9th Symphony would sound awful on a PA system. I doubt that the OP knows much about Queen’s music. The people of England voted Queen their favorite band. Not The Beatles, Stones, Who or Zep. Qu-fucking-een. Period.
share"The people of England voted Queen their favorite band. Not The Beatles, Stones, Who or Zep. Qu-fucking-een. Period."
While I respect that choice, I still consider Zep as FAR superior. I also like The Beatles and Pink Floyd more, but then yeah I guess Queen would be next on my list of british bands.
In what way, or how, do you consider Led Zep "FAR" superior? Just curious.

Judas Priest is heavy metal, not rock, as such it will have a much narrower target audience.
shareIt's a fair point, but metal is an offshoot of rock and, furthermore, reigned in the 70s-80s. This is complicated by the issue of what exactly constitutes metal and all the crossover acts that sound like metal but are pigeonholed as a different style.
shareThat's only because Freddy was gay. Queen was a great band but the Beatles and the Stones are better.
shareI enjoy them but don't like all their songs, but the reality is their music varied more than probably any other bands that has ever existed. The didn't just find do one particular genre of music and continue to redo it until the band broke up or they all died the way most bands do. The person making the movie seemed to have a thing for their early works and pretty much ignored the later work so you really didn't even get a full sampling of their music.
Only thing I don't understand is what national anthems are you listening to, because I don't really hear much of any national anthem I'm familiar with in their music.
This is one of the most confusing posts I've seen recently. Queen's music varied more than any other band that ever existed? Care to back that up with some bands that at least tried? Bands find a genre and redo it until they break up or die like most bands do? I think you are just saying random stuff w/o thinking very much.
Not being a Queen fan, I can't comment on the fullness of their career, but is there something wrong with emphasizing their early music versus after they became hugely popular? It's not a career trajectory they are trying to convey, it's a movie that has a particular aspect they hope is entertaining. I imagine the early years were the most fun for the members, forming, struggling, finding their sound, having success and building on it. Must have been a blast.
And the term "national anthem" is used loosely. Mostly they are adopted sports anthems and radio staples. I don't know if that's what they were shooting for, but they have a good three or so songs that will take a long time for the stadiums to extinguish.
If you can name some successful bands that created hard rock, rockabilly, disco, pop, power ballads, funk, rhythm and blues to name but a few then your post might have some credibility. You want bands that tried, well the Beatles come to mind but they didn't vary as much. And a lot of rock bands did a few disco type songs like Kiss and the Rolling Stones, but they never varied their music as much as Queen.
shareI'm not big on hyperbole, especially regarding rock 'n' roll music., and sure, Queen had a lot of unusual songs that seemed to come out of some other camp entirely. It's just he way the post was worded, I found it a little sloppy. "...more than probably any other bands that has ever existed." That's a lot of bands to wave off. "...until the band broke up or they all died the way most bands do." A rather gratuitous remark, if you'll pardon me saying so.
Jefferson Airplane and the Doors had a few different styles they liked to visit, maybe the Kinks as well (don't know their catalog very well). Heck, throw in the Grateful Dead while we're at it. Beatles are def a good example. Not saying any of them exceeded what Queen offered, but they're out there. Hope this improves my credibility.
I’m not particularly fond of The Doors lyrics.
shareThat's fair. Mr Mojo always got a lot of flack for being a misogynist but I guess I don't think along those lines. Taken alone, I don't believe the Doors lyrics exactly sparkle, but they seem to serve the songs well. Obviously there is some dramatic and dark stuff in some of it, but it seems more like Theater rather than profound word-smithing.
shareOn another message board, somebody said they felt like Queen's big hits were basically overdone novelty songs. What do you think of this opinion?
Edit: it was actually another thread right here on this board.
I agree. Doesn't mean they were bad, but there was an over-arching quality that sounded like they were going for popular rock hits versus stuff that was intimate and personal and not overtly commercial. My take only, YMMV.
shareI think the person who said that doesn’t know what “novelty song” means. It’s a song that is popular because of a gimmick. Dogs barking Jingle Bells is a novelty song. The collective works of The Three Chipmunks are novelty songs. The Monster Mash, by Bobby “Boris” Pickett is a novelty song. Yeah, I know, can you believe that someone posting on the internet doesn’t know whereof s/he speaks? Amazing!
shareI would say a song about riding your bicycle which from memory has a bicycle bell ring in it would qualify as a novelty song. Same with Bohemian Rhapsody which has the gibberish lyrics done in an overwrought operatic manner. Not every Queen song is a novelty song but many are and that always made me view them with cynicism.
shareNovelty songs are very simplistic. Queen's songs rarely were. The strong campy elements in many songs/performances would fit into novelty songs. Maybe his sense of humour and play is what's confusing the person.
shareI strongly disagree
In the nicest of terms I will add that you should check out Queen again...
Awful is an utterly absurd term to use when describing Queen
Had you gone with 'Meh, not my thing' I could accept that, not everything is for everybody...i get that
Queen is 'awful..?'
You are completely mistaken Sir.
Queen rocked arenas, raked in millions of dollars, half the kids in my neighborhood had their T-Shirts and I cant think of anybody in Rock who could match Freddie's voice
Go spin those records again
You missed a lot of great songs
