Some people boast here being intelligent and thus see themselves as the one's criticizing the overall rating the movie has. This is of course neither "Inception" or any movie based on a famous book with, say, a thousand pages. Just for the record: the three Star Wars scripts easily fit in any softback booklet or a fifth of any regular daily newspaper. Every movie must be compared to other movie of its genre. So, let's see the plots of some of famous Sci-Fi movies:
Alien, Alien2, Independence Day, Star Wars, Terminator, Battlestar Galactica, Gravity, Transformers, John Carter and the like. The plots are actually ultra simple, but we loved the movies for their visuals, for the thrill or and the action. For me the more sophisticated Sci-Fi plots were Blade Runner, Matrix, Gattaca or District 9. Starship Troopers wanted to be ironic and deeper, but most people were concentrated on the violent action scenes. Our brains will mainly sort great special FX out for information to last.
I loved the visuals of Pacific Rim and I always loved fighting robots as a child in the seventies and eighties. Fantastic Science-Fiction all too often denies any physical logic, with 2001 Space Odyssey maybe the most accurate in terms of science. The movies is completety visual-oriented with a simple plot, which most anime I ever seen, share. But hey, You did know that when entering the theatre did you? I actually didn't expect a better show than GI-Joe or Wolverine, but it was better. I also liked it more than Oblivion or Elysium, which actually tried to make an intricate plot but were not completely true to their aims in my opinion, although I enjoyed them.
Ok, how do Aliens normally die in movies?
They get a virus, they get blasted, they get pushed out into space, they get lured into a trap or some giant robot kicks the **** out of them. There aren't so many options. How do they subdue earth? The send tripods, walkers, ground troops, bugs, viruses, giant waves, demons and big monsters to the earth or elsewhere. So, this hasn't really changed since H.G. Wells times and anyone is invited to write some new chapter that actually sells. If I want to see big dialogue, great emotions, the best acting and fabulous plots I go the small Arthaus cinema with the elderly and intellectuals. But sometimes I just hunger for that saturday evening movie with friends and ice cream and popcorn (in that order) and want to be entertained. Pacific Rim is in my opinion really well done and it seems its impact is greater than some want us to believe, and the new League of Legends skins are not the only thing that came out of it.
You may now go on and tell me something about an University degree or anything like it, but I can tell You, that I'm totally fine with any Ad-Hominem attacks by wannabe intellectuals and I don't mean the OP, as he seems to have an eye for really good movies. If You mix intelligence with social intelligence, it is clear, that being humble is the best thing, as there always someone who's better than You in any field. And yes, I myself am a bit concerned about modern illiteracy, but the kids will sort it out somehow.
