Is this the most stupid movie ever or what?

...I mean the whole plot... highly advanced alien civilisation trying to invade earth using giant creatures that are cloned??? or give birth??? and much more stupid humans using giant robots to wrestle them...
How stupid can that be. Why do'nt aliens use some kind of virus, why not humans use thousands of small robotic weapons instead... totaly bull crap.
I don't use to coment movies but could't help it this time.

On the other hand Idris Elba was the only one that did some acting in this movie.

reply

Well, having giant robots fight giant monsters is pretty much the only way to have a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters. So, there's that.

That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die.

Funny, since its a complete fail.

reply

72% of critics disagrees.

reply

Lol. Hang on...that's your logic?? If it was a movie about dogs eating cat poop your defense would be well the only way to make a movie about dogs eating cat poop. Your logic is inane. That's not how you debate and it's also not a "win." It's a feeble and pathetic rebuttal.

This only proves that you haven't watched any mecha anime, which this film is inspired by.

I guess then we should thank the Lord for that.

I'll just say that you can't apply a real world logic with this film.

Well, no you should not. If the film cannot be enjoyed and understood upon its own premise, it is not a good film.

reply

But Pacific Rim can, and thus it's a good movie.

I went in expecting giant robots vs giant monsters, and that's what I got. I fail to see the problem.

Tell that to the other fanboi who was using that as a last ditch attempt to defend this film.

I went in expecting giant robots vs giant monsters, and that's what I got. I fail to see the problem.

The lack of logic presented in the film is the problem. You do realize that is the point of this thread, right? If you came to a thread about the lack of logic in a film and defend said film with, "but it doesn't need logic", you just failed miserably.

reply

I'm no fanboi, I found Pacific Rim a decent, but ultimately forgettable, action flick about robots and monsters. I didn't even know until after I saw it that it's apparently based on a whole genre of stuff from Japan.

The lack of logic presented in the film is the problem.

Here's the thing. I never expected logic. Even though I knew very little about the movie, I went in fully aware that I'd be watching something completely over-the-top silly in order to see some huge robots whack some huge monsters.

It's only a problem to people like you, who insist that every movie must follow a certain logical pattern, and follow various physical and emotional rulesets. I don't care about that, sorry, I don't. I watch movies as escapism to be entertained by, nothing more, nothing less.
My first thought when watching a movie is not about logical inconsistencies. It's about "does it look cool and fun and am I enjoying watching this".

And don't misunderstand me, this is not about being a dumb, mindless sheep just gobbling down Hollywood nonsense. No, this is a specific CHOICE of entertainment. Sure, it's nonsense. Sure, it's completely unbelievable. We know that. We just don't care.

Ditto.

I didnt expect much, but the lack of logic made what could have been a really interesting and dynamic film, instead a mildly amusing and silly MMPR-esque SFX spectacle aimed at the 10-20something demographic. The back story to Mako was vastly superior to any other segment of the film. That was a glimpse at how good this could have been. Hence the "problem". It doesn't make it unenjoyable, just idiotic and annoying at times.

You're trying to instill logic in a place where there isn't need to

This isn't about finding out what an alien civilization would do to destroy us

That's a different movie, maybe you can make it, or somebody else can

This is about giant monsters vs giant robots for the love of it

And it's awesome

Then you work a plot around it

Well, there's the difference that a massive amounts of kids, teens and even adults want to see large-scale robot fights (the sheer volume of mech-oriented entertainment out there kind of speaks for the demand), whereas there is zero demand for movies about dogs eating cat poop.

reply

In this case he obviously won. OP's "criticism" has no logic and only has personal hate for the movie. The other guy's rebuttal is pretty much spot on, and since you dont get it, I will spell it out for you: it is retarded when the only critique you have for a movie is its premise. This holds true in logics as well.

My TV committed suicide, my BD player is in a hospital with serious psychological issues, one of my dogs left me and the other attacked me...and my gf is still stunned on the sofa.

Now honestly... the balls that someone must have to look another human in the eyes and tell him that he likes pacific rim.

Awwww... you're cute.

Hyperbole is fun and all, but maybe you should suck it up and stop being such a special snowflake.

I love Pacific Rim. I've seen it upwards of five times. It's a well-crafted film with great art style, impressive use of background to integrate the story, some solid acting from some great actors, a straightforward storyline, positive attitude the likes of which is utterly unseen in modern hollywood, and the right mix of cornball action with homage to satisfy fans of the classic genre.

Go ahead, call me objectively stupid for liking a movie about robots fighting monsters that *you* have decided (based on no supporting arguments whatsoever other than "cuz I dun like it") is bad.

You and your ilk are nothing new around these parts.

Indeed, I just *proved* that I am a mouth breathing moron by disagreeing with your very personal and very unsupported opinion on the objective quality of a film.

Yet you still think that people dont like this movie cause the "robots vs monsters"...well that alone proves that you have the brain of a jellyfish.

Go ahead and check where I've posted. I'm not over there. I wouldn't waste my time griping up and down about a movie I hate. Maybe this movie is dumb dribble. Maybe it was a complete waste of money, time and acting talent. But how much more of a waste of time is it for someone to just sit in this room and complain and chat about it all day. I'm not saying you don't have the right to be here. I'm just wondering why you would want to be. Is trying to prove to all of the Pacific Rim fans that the are wrong that important to you? Do you ever think you'll actually accomplish it if they are as dumb as you perceive? Why not spend more time in the bogs about movies you like, and spare your blood pressure, and maybe make yourself a little happier?

Finally, 'Looper' is a critically-acclaimed film, so your accusation falls flat.

reply

D'awwww

Poor baby doesn't understand the movie.

That paragraph of verbal diarrhea pretty clearly shows that you utterly failed to grasp things that were quite literally told to you in the form of a narrative voice over.

Why would sync be unnecessary? The writers decide what is necessary in fiction, not you.

Dinosaurs with two brains is a less popular theory these days, true, but it's still hovering around. In any case it's irrelevant, since the Kaiju are not Dinosaurs and the comparison was just used to illustrate the point that Kaiju *do* have two brains, much in the same way that redundant processing units make sense in combat machines.

Why wouldn't they be able to wait that long? What about a different dimension says that time even flows the same way there? You do understand that a different dimension could have completely different physical laws, right?

Sending gigantic monsters seemed pretty effective. One monster could easily annihilate a city and, if not stopped, many more. That makes Kaiju more effective than one-time-use nuclear weapons.

Nobody ever said only siblings could drift. You are pulling this out of your ass. They said pilots are able to drift better with shared memories.

What are you, twelve? You think the wireless connection across a few feet between your controller and game system with an extremely limited number of potential commands is analogous to a signal over hundreds of miles transmitting hundreds of thousands of commands to each and every system in a 250 foot tall machine? Laughable.

Maybe one day, when you start paying attention, you'll have an opinion worth sharing, or even just an opinion that doesn't involve insulting everyone who disagrees with you as a primary component.

Feeb.

There are/were species that have multiple "brains" - ganglias that are dedicated for motor skills, reproduction etc.
Our "sapient" brain is just addition to much older "mammal" brain. They are both located in skull, but they are different and are responsible for different things.

Where did you get that "only" siblings could sync? They are most likely to be drift compatible, but does not mean that others cant.

Driving Jaeger is not supposed to be like Mortal Kombat simulator. You dont have one button for high punch etc. You have to move, evade, and act like a real person. It make sense that driving it from inside is more combat efficient than remotely controlling it.

The analog/digital thing can be explained that modern Jaegers like Striker need some "battery" to start the engine. If you knock that out, the engine will stall. Having a some sort of nuclear reactor that basicly runs as long as there is fuel is nice in confrontation with monster's EMP :)

The movie sets its own laws and manages to follow them quite accurately. There was a time that people laughed at the idea that men would travel under water in huge machines for months.

Still hard at work burrowing into your own ass, I see.

I suppose it shouldn't surprise me that you would hang on to the one single solitary nugget of pseudo-truth you possibly can, no matter how irrelevant or unrelated.

Let me spell it out for you, son:

There were no dinosaurs in this movie.

This movie was not *about* dinosaurs.

A theory about dinosaurs were used as a *loose* analog for a scientist to explain why Kaiju would have two brains.

I know, It's *really* tempting, what with your school field trip to the natural history museum last week, to jump up and down as if you have stumbled on to some gaping plot hole here, but I think you'll find that if you remove this piece of dialogue from the film entirely, nothing of significance changes.

I suppose I should thank you. Rarely do I experience such genuine mirth as when I imagine you triumphantly declaring that your towering intellect has trumped the foolish scientific proposals of Pacific Rim, a film about big metal guys punching big terrible sea monsters.

I think you need a hobby or something. I recommend watching film, a lot of film, without giving your asinine opinion on any of it for at least another ten years.

reply

And that dinosaur thing can be fixed without altering the plot too much, like, "We know that Kaijus were so big that they needed two brains, in a way that we used to think dinosuars would be like". In this context, DINOSAURS may not had two brains, but KAIJUS have two brains, meaning that Kaijus' brain structure was like what we used to believe that dinosaurs' brain structure would be like.

Though one thing I'm wondering is that, Drift is meant to share minds of two pilots right ("Ready to step into my head, kid?")? I wonder why they still had to communicate verbally. Just curious (and no, I'm not asking YOU, IceCharon).

reply

Still hard at work burrowing into your own ass, I see.

That alone says everything about you, you are "assuming" and talking about things that you have no idea..... as i said , that alone proves my point that your IQ is single digit....or maybe non existent.....and the rest of your post proves it even more.
Arguing or even talking with you is worst than talking to a rock, (truth to be said, a rock is way smarter than you actually)....anyway I am done arguing with idiots....let alone for this super dumb film, that apart from a bunch of halfwits everyone with IQ above 1 says the same thing, that is extremely idiotic.

reply

[deleted]

...and your point is?

Ahh... this is much harder than I thought. OK.

There was theory at one time that dinosaurs had two "brains". Paleontologs did indeed finds something like a second brain. Now they are debating what was the real purpose. So there is nothing in biology that would prevent some creature having 2 brains. When they say it in movie, its nothing preposterous.

why? no reason.

Well do you know that maneuvers can a jet plane do? Not much. And all are related to one dimension at one time. You cannot "jump backwards" in a plane. But you might in men-to-men combat.

eh no, its just stupid and utterly wrong

Nope it is not. My dad had a older car and on our way home the battery and all circuits died. But the engine did not. And we got home just fine. Without the lights, but that did not matter.
You dont need electricity for nuclear reaction. Period.

yeah like... even though that they are "in sync"

That is not breaking of the laws. They know, but still feel the need to talk. Same with you. You know you are repeating and clinging to some serious BS, but you still feel the need to bash PR for it :)

Go educate your self...

I have masters degree, I read a lot of science books, I am really good at solving puzzles. Thats why I have very satisfying job. And I am good at it, because I have open mind. But you wouldn't know about any of it.

I watched the movie and I liked it. After all, it was not a whitepaper on how the future giant kung-fu machines work :)

FIVE times????????????????????????

I give you a pass on the special bus for that. That said, seriously, I do not judge you for liking the film, really, incongruous as it is to me, as love of a film of course is subjective and we all like films for different reasons. It's not about awards - it's about how a film affects you and how it makes you feel.

That said, the only person I might judge is the one who said it was "intelligently made." That is just plain insanity. There isn't even any antidote for that type of thinking.

reply

intelligently made =/= intelligent

taking film seriously =/= taking PRODUCTION seriously

reply

People seem to have real trouble with this concept.

Pacific Rim is not groundbreaking.

It's not the renaissance of the human spirit.

What it *is*, however, is a remarkably tight film that suffers from relatively few of the major downfalls that many modern films do.

What it has in droves is heart, and this is significant due to the slew of Hollywood generated filler that we are forced to endure annually.

reply

Yup, that is some massive brass balls required to make that statement with a straight face. At least if you are over the age of ten.

reply

You knew the movie was about Robots vs. Kaiju and you went regardless. Id say you should only blame yourself.

You must be sooooooooooo smart.

Why cant people simply realize that entertainment is entertainment. THERE ARE NO SMART MOVIES. If I want to learn something, or enhance my intellect, I read a research paper or a good book. If you want to be intellectually challenged in the cinema, youre going to have a bad time.

Lastly, your girlfriend seems like a bitch, or you have no balls, if she "forces" you to do things you dont like.

reply

For me, it was free - I just watched it. LOL
However, I did not go into thinking it was going to be a masterpiece; I thought it would be entertaining and action-filled. I didn't expect academy award acting but I didn't expect what I got either. Other than Charlie Day and Ron Perlman who CLEARLY WERE THE ONLY ONES TO GET THE MEMO on how to act in this type of film, the rest were PAINFUL. I mean, I have watched z-level acting in z-level horror flix that put this acting to shame. This was a big budget flick with a brilliant name of Idris Elba attached to it. Even he was awful in this film.

As for the Mako controversy that seems to have created a sh&tstorm on this board, yes, the actress was very pretty, but she was one of the worst actresses ever put on screen. I don't care that our friend Block Busted (who clearly has a hard on for Mako, Ironman, and must be under the age of 16) cannot understand the subtlety of making wry and amusing comments within a serious criticism; he clearly is not old enough to comprehend satire, let alone levity.

reply

That feet comment is not called "levity". That's called "being a troll". If he wanted others to take him seriously, he shouldn't have mixed that into his criticism to begin with.

Also, if you thought this film was Idris Elba's worst, see 'Obsessed'.

And another, if you think Rinko Kikuchi is one of the worst actresses all time SIMPLY because of this, check out films like 'Babel'.

Finally, don't jump into assumpions that I'm a Mako fan and I'm 16 years old (as a matter of fact, I'm 20).

Lastly, your girlfriend seems like a bitch, or you have no balls, if she "forces" you to do things you dont like.

that there shows your quality and your intelligence, thats what you got from my post? really? now really? and thats is your way of thinking? really?
You are dumb as fk then, you are a supreme idiot...thus proving for once more that is a fact beyond any doubt that people with 0 IQ like PR. Period.

I am correcting myself. Your post was the best. post. ever. (explaining how bad Pacific Rim is; ITA!)

Please wish your BD player well; I hope with years of therapy and the right combination of meds, it can survive. I am sure there is a movie that can heal its wounds. Perhaps The Blues Brothers can make it feel better.

I send my condolences on the untimely death of your tv. May it RIP.

reply

That's ironic. 'Pacific Rim' had some of the best video/audio quality for a blu-ray.

Also, by agreeing with IceCharon, you're also agreeing with a guy who called:
-The Hunger Games
-The Place Beyond the Pines
-Looper
-The Avengers
-Blue Is the Warmest Color
-Iron Man 3
-Gravity
-Elysium
-The Godfather

...as some of the most retarded films of all time...

...and gave 'After Earth' 10/10 simply because of that.

reply

Actually, the only one I take umbrage with is The Godfather. That was a masterpiece. The rest were crap (I have not seen Blue is the Warmest Color, so that is exempt from my comment). Looper COULD have been brilliant; it ended up so mediocre and Bruce Willis basically reprised his own role in 12 Monkeys, only he forgot that THAT was a good film. JGL is good and normally I love Emily Blunt, but man, this story is stupid as is that lil Rainmaker boy. I am waiting for you to tell me that my argument is invalidated because of my Rainmaker boy comment. LOL Then again, the LOL will also do that for you. Oh well. Never mind.

reply

You're also agreeing wih a guy who has been praising 'Man of Steel' to death.

Also, do you not read the part where he gave 'After Earth' 10/10 even youth he hated it?

reply

Well there is NO excuse for after earth. LOL

reply

Your only argument is: "bla bla bla, he liked man of steel, bla bla bla after earth"
Still doesn't change the fact that Pacific Rim is a brain-dead movie for a mentally impaired audience.

reply

And the basis of your argument is that the film is using giant robots instead of nuclear weapons... in a MECHA science fiction film.

Also, if a film that got generally positive reviews (72%) is for mentally impaired audience, ww at dies that make of 'Man of Steel' (56%) and 'After Earth' (11%)?

P.S. You had your account for over a year, and yet, you never used it until last month. The question is, why?

reply

Because the stars weren't properly aligned.

reply

Stupid and irrelevant question, appropriate response.

@xenatikkanen-1

Perhaps The Blues Brothers can make it feel better.

And of course you through in an assumption to look like that you know what you are talking about.....the proof that you are indeed idiot.
You have 0 data to back up what you said....yet you couldnt just keep the BS to your self, The definition of mentality.

This thread is the hard fact that you must be a complete retarded to like PR.
Every fkng reply that i get is dumbest than the previous one.

reply
