Make up

Am I the only person who believes that Armie Hammer/ Clyde Tolson's makeup in the scenes depicting his later years was, to put put it mildly, unconvincing? Leonardo DeCaprio/J Edgar and Naomi Watts/ Helen Gandy clearly benefited from the services of proficient make up professionals (who were acknowledged in the credits). What went wrong with Armie/Clyde?

reply

I didn't like Leo's either - I thought he looked like Red Foreman.

Armie looked like the same guy (I can't remember his name) that played the rich/bad guy in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. As he aged and then turned to dust.

reply

I think part of the problem was that his makeup was overdone; they tried too hard to make him look old with excessive lines and liverspots. DiCaprio's seemed a bit more moderate by comparison.

His makeup job actually reminded me of Guy Pearce's old man face in Prometheus, which was also pretty poor, although at least in Pearce's case the argument might be made that it was somewhat intentional as part of the film's subtle campiness.

Tolson was supposed to be in his 60s and 70s in those scenes but he looked like he was a young guy who had murdered 90-year-old and was walking around wearing his severed face. He reminded me of Grandpa from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

DiCaprio's makeup, on the other hand, looked pretty good to me. The problem with him was that his voice sounded way too youthful for a 70-year-old.

Bruce Wayne? Why are you dressed up like Batman?

reply

It's literally all I ever noticed whenever I saw old clyde tolson, it ruined every scene he was in

Old hoover also had some defects, sometimes he was yelling and you could clearly see how his mouth did not sync up with what he was yelling, It looked fake as *beep*

Horrible make-up job. Looks like something out of a bad horror film.

reply

Yeah, I thought all the make-up was bad. Maybe that's why everything was shot in the dark - to hide it? I couldn't see half the movie. Then again, I fell asleep both times trying to, also.

How can a movie basically about the history of the FBI be so DULL???

reply

Unconvincing? Hell, it was comical!

i've seen tv made things from the 1950's where they have made up people to look older, and it works well, and of all the progress i figure they must have made since then and have this fella look like dan aykroyds part in "nothing but trouble", i was blown away and thought it would be over this entire board.

everything you go after you get,
your greed set me up for a life in hell,
today youre rolling high,
with a few extra bucks by ruining my life,
while i was tied, fed lies,
as i got back to the ground, was cleaned out,
behind my back robbed me to past erased,
as im drifting out in nowhere today.
