Am I the only person who believes that Armie Hammer/ Clyde Tolson's makeup in the scenes depicting his later years was, to put put it mildly, unconvincing? Leonardo DeCaprio/J Edgar and Naomi Watts/ Helen Gandy clearly benefited from the services of proficient make up professionals (who were acknowledged in the credits). What went wrong with Armie/Clyde?

I agree with all of you, also i think it was a bad decision to make them up in the first place.

If you talk to makeup pros, they'll tend to say that if you really want to be convincing, the best you can age or make someone younger is by 20 years, so in DiCaprio's case, late 50s? He's a special case too, having relatively smooth features, but Arnie Hammer, barely in his 30s, is pushing the limit, so it's no surprise that aging him 40+ years results in a Madame Tussod reject. Personally I wish they'd just cast older for the old scenes. I thought Hammer was fine as a young Clyde.
shareI couldn't agree more. No amount of suspended disbelief could make up for the horrible make up (pun intended:)). It was even worse than Benjamin Button. All I have left after the movie is a horrible sense of trying to dechipher Leonardo's face behind the makeup...

When he collapsed at the tracks, let's just say my suspension of disbelief flew out the window and all I could think was what the hell was that? Some recycled Cantina alien from Star Wars? There were no wrinkles, he looked like a weird giant baby with liver spots. In the following scene at the dinner table it suddenly looked pretty decent, but different. I guess it's all about lighting, it looks good indoors with lighting that highlights the wrinkles, but it looks like crap in sunlight.
Yes, let's all agree they should have cast another actor for the older Clyde..it very much distracted me from the from fully appreciating any of those scenes, though the last dinner make up around his eyes did seem better. Make up on all other leads was far superior. For what it is worth, we've been informed Eastwood likes to work at a fast clip, though he surely wouldn't have sacrificed the casting or make up of a major character to his own schedule.
shareAnd it's not even like you still recognise the actor (who in this case, sorry, isn't even that well known)! It just looks like some dude in a bad latex mask. They could have just taken two older actors for the later scenes.
shareI actually came on here to post about the make up specifically. Only on Leo it seemed the artists attempted to make it looks realistic, the other two were just shockingly poor results!
