Why Was This Movie So Disliked?

I saw this movie after hearing all the negative reviews. It was probably why I waited so long to see it. But once I did, I was enthralled by it. People said it was boring, and though I was expecting to be bored, I wasn't. Although I tend to be pretty dismissive of most films, for their lack of ambition and eagerness to please, I loved this film for never trying too hard to be pleasing or to provide easy answers and explanations. It was engaging, I think, for being so obscured and enigmatic.

It plays out like a Greek tragedy, with the specter of divine retribution haunting us and punishing those who use revenge as a justification for any lapse in humanity. So many films about revenge get a pass on all the gore and violence although all they do is present justification for the carnage. This film seeks no justification for it. The carnage is not entertaining and it's not cathartic. It's simply violence. It's the harshness of life in all the tawdry glare and impassivity. Terrible things happen and either we let them happen or we seek them out.

Perhaps this film was too ambitious for its own good, but I love it. The violence is meant to be disturbing and it's meant to provoke thought. When there's too much happening on screen and when plot lines get too contrived, it's easy to turn off our thoughts. But I had to think about this film because it refused to lend itself to easy, disposable consumption.

This is one of those rare films that isn't afraid to be hated, and perhaps relishes our discomfort. But I'm relieved to find a film that doesn't delight in it's own nastiness and viciousness but, rather, almost feels ashamed of it. It's beautiful to look at, yet so unutterably hideous.

I wonder if people didn't like the film because it places humanity up to such a harsh light and we seem to fall so short. It's not exactly inspiring. But there's an undeniable truth to it that makes other more plot-driven sideshows feel like even more of a waste of time. This film isn't trying to score easy points with special effects, throwaway humor and plot contrivances.

This film will get more credit one day, but we live in an age of many distractions and minimal patience. The only reason people prefer the violence of Tarantino films is because Tarantino makes violence fun. But why can't we show it up as something ugly without people getting upset?

I like art films and loved drive but this movie just was disappointing, I didn't love it or hate it, I was just disappointed. I just thought some of the stuff happening in the film had no purpose at all and felt a bit pretentious(by that I mean it was implied to be significant in the movie but isn't significant at all). The action scenes also felt bland because we didn't care about the characters at all. and what is with those *beep* scene of gosling staring. it didn't show anything about his character did it? if some emotion was at least shown in these long sessions of staring, I would have liked the movie a bit more. drive had style and substance but only god forgives is mostly style. the symbolism sucks and I LOVE symbolism(I mean holt mountain is one of my favourite films of all time) the movie was different just for the sake of being different.

I personally disliked it for all the still moments in it... It was so boring... Like watching Gosling taking his tie off for a minute or stuff like that.
I wasn't a huge fan of the whole back and forth thing, and the karaoke stuff... but I could accept it, the stills I have more trouble with.
All for a story that wasn't that interesting to me so..

I thought that was the best scene in the movie. Not even the fighting, but what happened before it. Funny how that works, eh? ;)

reply

Well, if the scene was made, somebody must have liked it, so you're definitely not alone... but not for me :)

Great thread guys. I love your descriptions and breakdowns of the film and I agree whole heartedly. In fact, I think this is Refn's best film. Bronson and Valhalla Rising are great as well but Only God Forgives is something else.

The only real enemy to have ever existed, is an eternal one.

It's interesting how I didn't like Valhalla Rising all that much, but really, really enjoyed... Well, maybe not enjoyed as much as was enthralled by, this movie.

Maybe I should give VH a third watch some time.

I don't know why it was so hated, I saw it once two years ago and I have to watch it again but I thought it was pretty good. There were certainly instances of style over substance but for me, it worked. If Zack Snyder always gets the pass (his films are always style over substance, not a fan, I think DOTD is his only good film) then I don't know why this got hate. Only God Forgives was certainly not boring and violent to top it off, while also having a surreal vibe that worked when I first saw the film, it was all like a dream. Very interesting directing.

Only God Forgives is not on the same level as Drive but I still recall it being pretty good.

I'm so glad to have found this post! And that there are people who I can relate to agreeing that this is actually a not bad movie experience, and this is one of an example that proves to me not necessary the majority thinks of something means it's the whole truth. I'm glad I gave this movie a try although skeptic of the low IMDB rating at first.

I'll never underestimate a low IMDB rating movie again!

As an Asian from the same corners of the world this movie is set in, I'm an aspiring filmmaker that wish someday I can make such similar films to introduce our culture to the rest of the world.

Beautiful work and such an inspiration!

I wish the filmmakers are reading this, so that they are not to dishearten by the Low imdb rating and that there are people like us who appreciates this film.

I can't wait to share the analysis some of you has posted here to my friends who has watched it and hated it.

It's disliked because it's not very good.

Yes the cinematography is stunning but the script is awful, the acting is pretty weak (great cast can't do much with this writing), and scenes are frequently so silly that they evoke laughter.

A sad fact of "art-house" cinema is that often engaging visuals will get an audience to assign a level of depth and profundity to a film that simply isn't there. Had this film not had amazing cinematography and had the director not been just off a career high, we wouldn't see people trying long essays on how the film is secretly brilliant. Had this exact same film been made by a no-name director without as much visual flair, we'd be saying it was a second rate grind-house style revenge thriller (which is the truth).

Any movie which is pretentious enough will have a number of supporter who pontificate endlessly on the "real meaning" of the film that stupid audiences missed because it wasn't spoon-fed to them. Usually they do so while patting themselves on the back for decoding this mis-understood masterpiece. I've last track of all the lengthy defenses I've read of The Village or Lady in the Water or all the other M Night failures.

Basically, you can tell yourself that other people dislike this film because they're not as smart as you are but I think you're just indulging in intellectual masturbation.

Very well said. I was also surprised at the low rating and the hate. I think maybe this movie came off as pretentious to most, which doesn't help. I also believe that if someone finishes a movie and doesn't understand it immediately, they get a little angry and never give it another thought and write it off. I'm guilty of this myself. The Pledge, Enemy, and the Funny Games remake are some examples. I was angry or frustrated after they ended and then later thought about them and came to appreciate, if not, love them.

I had to give bonus points to this one just for the cinematography and atmosphere/mood. And as far as crime dramas go, especially ones involving revenge, its plot was very solid to me. And I found that red hallway very Lynchian, who I'm a big fan of. Also, I think the best movies make the viewer feel something strongly, either positive or negative, by the end. And "beautiful... yet...hideous" - very well put.

I think a combination of its strangeness and audiences expecting Drive 2.
