WHAT TOTAL TOSH!!!!!

From the reading of the dvd case it sounded rather intriguing and interesting on paper. Me and my partner are avid sci-fi fans. What followed was tantamount to wallet rape. The film wasn't worth tuppence. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not adverse to ethereal, existential, thought-provoking or slow burning films (I often enjoy and highly rate them). But this was dreary, self-indulgent nonsense. You can watch the whole beginning, middle and end in the first five or six minutes during the opening sequence. That's all you need to watch. Anything thereafter is a complete waste of time and actors' wages. How IMDB have rated it so highly is beyond me. And despite the quality of the acting pedigree in the film, it didn't even manage to stand as an acting masterclass. Oh dear.

Hmmm... Just saw the film, and I think I have to disagree with you. There are two 'sci-fi' elements to the film. The other planet, obviously, but also if and how did Justine sense the doom, even before the events portrayed in the film. For example, the reference to building caves with her nephew clearly precedes the events in the film; was the sense of impending doom the cause of the depression (again something that started before the events depicted in the film and seemed to have been long-term)? It seems to explain Justine's behaviour (e.g. not caring about the orchard photo, changing the pictures in the books in the library). Or was she just 'plain Jane' depressed, exacerbated by her dysfunctional family. As far as I remember, the other planet was not explicitly referenced in Part One.

Judging by some of the other comments here, the 'depression' element does seem to resonate with others (but, of course, every person's experience will be different).

Yes, it is self-indulgent at times (e.g. lots of references to other works of art etc). I felt that this might have been deliberate, perhaps reflecting the most of the characters. Perhaps this goes for the dreariness too. Generally, the 'look and feel' reflected the characters themselves. Personally, I wouldn't call it nonsense though, and I thought the acting was rather good.

Anyway, probably too simple-minded for your tastes but still better than the vast majority of stuff out there! Good enough for a simpleton like me.

i'm sorry but Tuppence ?

your use of tantamount was over the line too lol

and what does Daniel Tosh have to do with it ?

So.. you don't know what it was about.
Your preconceived notion of what it was going be like was wrong
and that is some how the movies fault ?
sorry noooooope.

Your not smart enough to "get it"
..get over it

you either love lars von trier or you hate him. there is really no in between.

Oh, another dumb Brit. We know you people exist, don't worry.

The biggest fault is the assumption that the movie was sci-fi.

Yeah with the actors in the movie and the idea.. it seemed ok.. but really it is a pile of crap.... I normally like Lars Von Trier movies... they make me think.. but this one is just annoying drivel... I can't say I've experienced any depression in my life but this really doesn't speak on that... it is a movie about a bunch of a$$holes with a long drawn out pile of crap... perhaps it was a good movie.. people say good movies make you feel some sort of emotion... I guess since I hate this movie it has to be good in that way... but really.. what a load of crap... and I like a lot of the actors in this film... they all needed a punch in the head.. that is about all the quality actors in this movie could draw out of me... skip this pile of crap and go watch Antichrist or the Nymphomaniac movies... they are much more interesting and thought provoking than this massive turd
