WHAT TOTAL TOSH!!!!!

From the reading of the dvd case it sounded rather intriguing and interesting on paper. Me and my partner are avid sci-fi fans. What followed was tantamount to wallet rape. The film wasn't worth tuppence. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not adverse to ethereal, existential, thought-provoking or slow burning films (I often enjoy and highly rate them). But this was dreary, self-indulgent nonsense. You can watch the whole beginning, middle and end in the first five or six minutes during the opening sequence. That's all you need to watch. Anything thereafter is a complete waste of time and actors' wages. How IMDB have rated it so highly is beyond me. And despite the quality of the acting pedigree in the film, it didn't even manage to stand as an acting masterclass. Oh dear.

A movie like this is what makes me reach for a Michael Bay dvd afterward . I just need to see something to blow up onscreen .

Sorry, but have to disagree. This was one of the most depressing films I have ever seen. It was hard to watch but I couldn't take my eyes off of it. The line when Dunst said, "It tastes like ashes", had me in tears. I don't know. Maybe it's because I have been there before and I can relate to the horrible depression. Sorry you didn't like it.

I'm just a guy that likes horror flicks.

You really feel the need to show your British by using the word tosh? Please grow up.

'you're British'-if one is going to critique, then best be on solid ground.

Load of old cobblers sez I. :)

This isn't a sci-fi movie. And if you can call a movie as compelling and emotional as this a "dreary, self-indulgent nonsense", can I please get a list of all movies you've placed in this category?

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

I absolutely loved this movie. Gripping, layered, intense.
Huge references to Tarkovsky's work.
And such a rewarding ending...

This is not a sci-fi film...it's a film about depression and it actually captures that feeling. So it actually succeeds its purpose.

If you want to see another Hollywood movie where things get blown apart and a US citizen comes to save us all from the disaster, this is not it.

As for Trier, i think his works are a bit uneven, but sometimes he really nails it, like he did with Dogville or Melancholia.

I guess so.

- And I don't want to be depressed, thank you very much. I lasted about 1/2 hour, turned this movie off and dumped it.

Why is it people always feel the need, when declaiming a film as terrible, to explain they do actually like movies in its genre?
And then go right ahead and prove through their ignorant comments that they clearly do not understand nor have ever seen movies in its genre.
It always reminds of the, "I can't be racist: I have black friends!" inevitably followed by, "I'm not racist but..."

reply

Agreed. This movie was a$$ and not in a good way.

High Their!
