Rob Zombie's Halloween was better than this

Seriously this film tried and failed to recreate the original. The essence was totally lost.

For all it's flaws Zombie's remake had it's own identity and was actually provided an interesting take on Myer's background. This one just revisits the same stuff the first one did but it is not sure where to go and feels confused.

Zombie’s movies were absolutely awful. This wasn’t great, but it was much better than RZ’s films imo.

I have to disagree. The only thing I will give the Rob Zombie films is they tried something different. However that does not go far at all. The new thing he did try was terrible. Rob Zombie turned Michael into a white trash hill billy. He made him into every other generic serial killer we have ever seen. So when you say the take on Myers background was interesting I can not help but cringe. The charm of Myers is not knowing why he is evil. Myers to me follows the philosophy that some people are simply born evil. When you take away that mystery Myers becomes less interesting.

This movie was by no means great. It was by far though the best Halloween film we have gotten in a while. Is that a high bar?Nope but sometimes going back to the drawing board and the fundamentals is what works best. Overall it was decent. Not exceptional but watchable.

I agree, RZ turned Myers into a momma boy especially the second one which is the worst Halloween movie ever made

reply

Oh do not even get m started on his second one. It was awful in every sense of the word. To me these are the best Halloween films. I will list why. I am not listing them in order but we all know the original is without question the best one. The rest I list I feel are debatable among each other.

Halloween: You simply can not beat the original. It had great buildup and subtlety. It definitely is dated but the suspense music and sound effects hold up very nicely. They will not ever top this one. The opening scene gets you hooked and horrified immediately. Still make it a point to watch it every Halloween. One of my favorite horror films.

Halloween 2: A decent follow up. Does it come anywhere close to the original? No but it does not take away anything from the franchise I feel. The setting is good, it taking place in a hospital does add some creepiness to it.

Haloween 4 Return of Michael Myers. This one definitely has serious flaws. The way Michael's death is explained away after two was terrible. The mask looks bad this time and Michael's build is far too bulky. Now with that said Danielle Harris was a great little actress in this. She picks up the mantle beautifully from Jamie Lee Curtis. Donald Pleasance is also fantastic as usual. The ending to this actually had a ton of potential. I was sad we never got to follow up on this ending. I think Danielle Harris could have done so many neat things with this idea. Anyway not really a good movie but some good elements in it.

Halloween 2018: Basically a nostalgia fest. However it was done competently. I enjoyed the fact that Michael became mysterious again and the return of Jamie Lee was quite welcomed. This idea was somewhat tried in H20 but for some reason in that movie I just couldn't take it seriously. It felt like a slapstick for some reason. This one to me felt like I could take it seriously. The music was well placed and the one shot of Michael walking when he bumps into the kids was great. Are there any surprises not really.

reply

Exactly! "Explaining" Michaeil Myers was a terrible move. Not knowing the why is part of what makes him scary.

I'm not sure, the first movie was okay but Halloween '18 had a better portrayal of Michael Myers.

Zombie's remake went overboard on the violence. This movie however was softer than a bunny rabbit, I mean the camera cutting away after every murder as well as being shot from afar and the subdued sound effects made this feel PG-13.

It's a tie, but if I had to favour one or the other, it'd probably be the 2007 movie.

The violence was not the only problem with Zombie's film. The fact that he made Michael Myers into a generic serial killer was also a problem. The acting and dialogue in the Zombie film is horrendously bad imo. The dysfunctional white trash hill billy parents raising Michael made it lame. Him being played by a guy who is like 7 feet tall made it feel like he was a gigantic wrestler. The music is used in all the wrong places.

The music does not play when he has the mask only when he is a kid. Rob Zombie's second film does not even use the music. Then how can we forget Michael Myers for the first time actually speaks in the second Zombie film. What is it that the great Michael Myers says after years of not uttering a word? Die! He says die! Facepalm! Anyway I am sorry but I never understood the love and praise Zombie gets as a director. All his films have that white trash hill billy feel. I just do not dig that type of film. However to each their own. That is simply my two cents.

Same here. I honestly never understood what exactly people see in his director's skills. His movies are simply despicable.

Good to know I am not alone. Seriously I remember hearing oh this new Halloween reboot is in the hands of a great director because it is Rob Zombie. I literally scratched my head and went Rob Zombie is a good director?

In fact, I believe he is a wrestler

I think both were pretty bad but Zombies' took the cake for tryna too hard to be, "out there".

The only thing I liked about RZ Halloween was the first half of his H1. The kid was creepy.

That's the only thing I remember about the movie.

i watched both zombie's film & the 2018 version this past week, & i thought the new one was vastly superior. the zombie flm just seemed to revel in trashy ugliness, and that's something i can enjoy sometimes, but he did it with no sense of glee or fun whatsoever.

i actually really liked his earlier 'devil's rejects' - that was a film that had energy & a trashy, campy joy. if he'd brought a bit of that to halloween, he might have made a film i enjoyed.

i don't think the new halloween is great by any means, but it was a pretty enjoyable, solidly better than average slasher. could have been better, but certainly good enough to be better than almost every other film in the franchise besides the original.

Rob Zombie ruined the Halloween movies with his overly-explicit sexual trashy innuendo. Almost every girl was nude in that movie because he's such a pervert and uses his director prowess to take advantage of young women in film.

Exactly. Women are so feeble-minded that the only way they would ever appear nude in a movie is if someone took advantage of them. Thank goodness they have White Knights™ like you to take up for them.
