Something very special about her performance here. I'm glad to see her back and it's interesting to see how she's matured as an actress. She was very convincing and perfect vulnerable as his wife. Hopefully the critics will agree and see this too. I'm rooting for her at next years big award ceremonies.

For me she was a scene stealer in Black Swan. She was just fantastic! I wish there were more scenes with her in there.
I agree 100% with the op, Winona's performance is awards worthy. My only concern is bad timing: not many great films released in the first half of the year get the recognition they deserve...
shareI totally agree about Winona. It was great to see her back on the screen and she did an incredible job of playing Deborah Kuklinski. I know Hollywood can do all kinds of makeup tricks but I thought she looked absolutely fantastic. I hope this means we will start seeing her more often. She can still play the "innocent" and young looking character as well as the "older" and more dramatic type of character. She looked great and was fantastic in Iceman.
It was also nice to see her in Black Swan.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will. Perhaps she could get an Independent Spirit nod? Anything more would require heavy campaigning by the distributor.

there is a lot of oscar buzz for michael shannons performance in iceman. most of the reviews are saying that he will get an oscar nod for it. no way they could ignore all of these great reviews and oscar buzz. those same reviews say winona was great in it too.
shareGreat reviews don't cut it. It will all come down to whether or not the studio sends out screeners for the film. If they do, then there's definitely a chance, if not there's just no way.
Oscar voters have so many films to see in a given year, that they have to be sent screeners to even consider a film. They're not going to go out and watch a film on their own and it's clear that not many people saw The Iceman based on its gross.
Ann Dowd got Oscar buzz for the Indie film Compliance last year. Good reviews for her performance and she was considered a darkhorse Oscar contender. However, the film distributor said it would not send out screeners and put any money into an Oscar campaign and Ann Dowd didn't receive a Golden Globe nod, a SAG nod, or an Oscar nod...despite winning many critics awards.
It's all about campaigning. Good reviews will help if it's campaigned, but it won't clinch and Oscar nod.

nicole kidman was nominated for a golden globe for paperboy also a millenium film. it made less money than iceman and came out in less theaters than iceman. winona ryder will win an oscar for iceman. if they screened paperboy they will definitely screen iceman.

Yeah she was awful. Not the worst acting i've seen. but definitely not stand out. and for one of the first times I actually thought Ray Liotta was terrible. I hated him in this movie,he wasn't very convincing at all. I felt he was a bit miscast. Michael Shannon was perfect though, although the movie overall was a big let down,his acting was perfect. That whole freakout he does in that one scene where he breaks dishes...That was fu cking excellent.
