mighty aphrodite limited 200+ pollock limited 200+
Mighty Aphrodite: 26 Million dollar gross (on 15 million dollar budget), a Woody Allen film, and distributed by Miramax (which has distributed many Oscar winning films).
Pollock: Directorial debut by respected actor Ed Harris, in his prime, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics (which again has distributed many Oscar winning films), 8.5 million dollar gross on 6 million dollar budget. Also about a respected artist.
The Iceman: Directed by the man of the straight to DVD film Danika and little known RX, grossed 1.9 million dollars on a 10 million dollar budget, distributed my Millennium Films which has distributed mostly action films and the company does not have an Oscar to its name. About a serial killer.
Bottom line is that money comes into Oscar nominations and it's the film distributor that pays money to run campaigns for actors, films, and filmmakers. The two films you mentioned, while having a limited release, grossed more than it's film budget and were distributed by companies that run Oscar campaigns. That is not the case with The Iceman.
Trust me, I'd love for Winona Ryder to get an Oscar nomination. I think it's be a great comeback. But, it'd take a miracle for it to happen. Unless she wants to run her own campaign and send out screeners so people will actually watch her film, then it's just not going to happen.
Let it slide, overhead...
