Really? THIS is the big new Cult Comedy?

Okay, I just watched the film on NetFlix Instant Play, and yea, the film completely stank. And yet for some reason, everybody and their dog loves this. It's a good idea on paper, I guess, and there were attempts at humor in this thing. The big issue is this: whoever made this movie doesn't know about how to execute jokes. Every single punch line and joke in this movie is one that you can see coming a mile away! Take the scene with the police officer in the house. At the beginning of the movie, they show how a support beam is faulty and could fall on them with its many nails. You guys cannot honestly be telling me that as soon as the cop starts walking towards the support beam, that he's going to put his hand on the darn thing and get impaled. Or the thing with the wood chipper, and you see Tucker moving back and forth throwing wood into the thing. How could you not see coming that the kid who's about to run at him is going to miss the timing and land right into the thing! Sorry to rain on your parades, but this is not good comedy, at least not in my opinion.

Your life must be really sad if you're not able to enjoy a movie as hilarious as this one...

If they did what you suggested we'd get the other version of you that said "where did the bees come from" or "why at the last second did Tucker duck" or "how come that beam was loose?"

It was brilliantly funny and imaginative, plus Katrina Bowden was smoking hot.

Have you recently had elective surgery? Seems possible they may have accidentally removed your sense of humor.

Um, you DO know this is a parody, right?

I agree with you on this one... I watched it with very high hopes. I expected it to be halfway decent considering it earned a 7.6 on IMDB. If you have any sense for comedy do not watch this movie (this is coming from someone who laughs a lot and enjoys 99% of comedies out there even those with bad reviews).

See, there's your problem. 99% of the comedies out there are balls out stupid. You have a malnourished sense of humor. So when you came across something savory, you thought it tasted like crap.

This was one of the worst comedy films I've ever come across... I watch a lot of comedies (both good and bad) and appreciate even the bad ones at times... And I get that people have different comedic sensibilities. I'm just wondering what you would respond to the OP's point where he/she mentioned that you (i.e., the audience) could see each joke and execution coming from a mile away. Coupled with an awful delivery... killed the movie for me.

You get that people have different comic sensibilities. Yet you forbid people from watching this movie if they like comedy. You know what. Whatever.

You're strange, little man.

Sigh! AGAIN .. The deaths are not the joke/punchline .. they are the SETUP and the punchline is how Tucker and Dale react to the deaths.

You probably think something like "Meet The Stupids" is a classic, if you laugh at 99% of comedies out there then you have some serious issues.

I really wish the IMDb boards had at least an upvote system lol

lol, really cut off your own legs with that one, idiot

reply

Is it possible that your high hopes prevented you from liking it? Same to OP referring to its cult status.

I, for one, had no predisposition to this movie. Just saw it on amazon prime having never heard of it. I judged its cover for a while, and decided to give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised.

The jokes coming a mile away are part of the shtick. As someone previously said, they are establishing how truly unprepared Dale and Tucker are for what is about to happen, and for how seemingly "jacked up" the kids are for their ambush. Whether or not you're into that shtick is up to you. You're entitled to your opinion, but I personally don't think the joke delivery system became trite over the course of the movie.

I mean, seriously, we're not talking about Fargo here. Don't walk in feeling like you'll have that experience. Even critically thinking about it this much has made it less pleasant for me.

Like someone said previously, don't let any of these comments shape your opinion too much. I personally suggest you give it a chance with average expectations.

I Think you have a valid point there, the comic scenes are a bit obvious. But if you didn't watch the trailer and don't know what to expect it will still be somewhat entertaining.

It started off good. Even funny, at first. It lost the effect once the first kid died. It was too obvious what was going to happen from there. Granted I get that it's parodying what most slasher films do, but it missed out on parody, the funny in carrying out the deaths. I watched it because people were on the Shaun of The Dead page stating how much funnier and better carried out this was. I do apologize to be of a differing opinion, but this is not even close. Sad, because I like Alan Tudyk, too. The Tucker & Dale characters were good, though. I think it was the 'kids'. It felt too much like a made for fearnet type of flick rather than a real movie when they were on screen. The horror movies they were parodying weren't supposed to be the fearnet low budget types, but the real studio movie type of slasher films, with mostly good actors. However, it ended up feeling like a low budget parody, with non-seasoned actors.

"for some reason, everybody and their dog loves this" - maybe you're the one that's off the mark. I get what you're saying but I think you missed the whole point of the movie and are trying to take it too seriously. It's not a parody as others have claimed. It's just a silly comedy that's supposed to be obvious. You know after the first kid impales himself that Dale and Tucker aren't going to kill anyone but that the college kids are going to do themselves in. You know Dale is going to end up with the girl. You know that Chad is going to end up being the bad guy. The fun of this movie is knowing what's going to happen and waiting for it to happen. That, and the great dialogue by the Dale and Tucker. Yes, you knew that the cop was going to get "beamed" as soon as he walked towards it but waiting for it to happen was the fun part. It wasn't the killing that was funny, it was the way they reacted to it. Like when the one kid burned up Tucker said "he's cracklin' like a log" and Dale said "wow, that stinks". Sure, they did the same schtick over and over but so did the Three Stooges and it was funny every time.
