Bad McGuffin (SPOILERS)

Dumbest McGuffin yet. At least the Ark and the Grail were based on religious miracles and Temple of Doom had magical stones and Hindu gods etc, so it made movie sense. Right now, they go anti-religious. They totally ditch the Jesus-piercing spear in the beginning, which is a message, and opt for, "mathematics" LOL. Ergo, Archimedes' Antikythera locates "naturally occurring rifts in space-time" because... mathematics. See? In Raiders and Last Crusade, Indy was a cynical man, a fact-based scientist, who had to put down his own convictions and search his own soul for some faith. That was the beauty of it. Now, in Dial of Destiny, what are Indy's beliefs? What does he have to confront? What is he facing? "Mathematics?" And then he outwernervonbrauns THE Werner von Braun, saying, "your 'calculations' are wrong because...continental drift?" Otherwise it would work as a charm, you see! It's mathematics!

This is good analysis and exactly what I came here to read. Seems disappointing.

reply

I am guessing they are turning it into more like comic book movies.

reply

Is that what happens in the comics? Never read them.

reply

I think he was more referring to the green screen CGI superhero crap they keep churning out.

reply

Also in Marvel movies they tend to use science to explain ancient mythology, like Thor is an alien.

reply

“Math sucks!”

reply

The Space Between Spaces!

reply

Yeah, I'm not sure anything can match the pure unadulterated cringeshit that was the crystal skull MacGuffin.

reply

Yeah, I don't think the dial made for an interesting enough artefact. They could have done a lot more with the idea.

reply

Or it just good popcorn fun 4 ppl who don’t overanalyze
