You will hate this movie if...

You will hate this movie if you don't understand that this is a musical based on a Broadway play. So if you don't like people randomly breaking out into song, skip this movie.

You will hate this movie if you don't like big '80s hair bands and pop rock songs of that era.

You will hate this movie if you are not expecting a very silly, ridiculous, over the top spectacle.

If you hate Glee, this movie is not for you.

I had very low expectations before watching this movie but was pleasantly surprised. Lots of unexpected funny moments, great songs, and even though I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, I have to say he nailed his performance as the over-sexed rock god Stacee Jaxx. Rock of Ages is silly escapist entertainment, but definitely not for everyone.

There's a flaw in OP's post. I hate Glee, but I like this movie.

Aceetone, I completely agree with you. I didn't watch it with high expectation, but I was pleasantly surprised. The songs were amazing, as were the actors and singers performing them. Tom Cruise seems to be a mix of Bret Michaels and Axl Rose. He's perfect as an aging rock god, who has finally figured out that he needs more to his life than groupies and alcohol. I had to look it up and was completely amazed that he did his own singing. Who knew? So used to seeing him as an action hero, what a refreshing change of character for him.

Loved the high-haired, one-hit-wonder bands of the 80s.
Love Glee.
Love silly, absurd comedy.

Hated this movie for the following reasons:
Catherine Zeta Jones' accent. I barely bought her in Chicago. This was worse. Even if it was intentional it was just annoying.

Tom Cruise.

Script was not funny at all. I laughed not once.

Couldn't find one character I cared about. I feel like my time was wasted.

I did not like the movie at all.

You are "mostly" right.

I hate Glee, but that's because it's a teeny bopper show.

LOVED Rock of Ages.

....you saw what a mess they made of the Broadway show! The Broadway show is so damn funny and amazing. This movie is a shell of what the play was. The weird thing is that they could have done it quite easily still with the same cast. This film has some chuckles and some laughs. The play was non-stop with great singers, actors and music. This was one of the best shows I'd seen on Broadway in years.

If you liked the movie, you'll go crazy for the Broadway show. Saw it again last month. The present cast is even better than the original.

I actually think the acting was fine. Quite a line-up. But the directing and the script lacked in depth, so the story did not always flow naturally or consistently well.

Misfits to the cocktail, although lovable, I found JH - pretty good cast, but just annoying and too high-pitched, RB - he brought his lovable self, didn't bother to create his character from scratch. The pet monkey, as it was, seemed redundant.

Highlights - the male lead, TC, AB.

All in all, the singing was surprisingly good. The story is relatable. The overall product could have been better.

You are absolutely right, I did not know this was a musical going in and I hated every second of it. I hate musicals and would never knowingly pay to go see one.

And I hate glee.
