Laverne Cox Was Brilliantly Cast.

Say what you will about her appropriateness for the role of a male transvestite, there are very few actors whose faces can match the expressiveness of Tim Curry. I'm quite impressed; she obviously loved every minute of her performance.

Let's not be derogatory for the sake of it. Whether you love the production or hate it, Laverne Cox is still a woman, not a 'thing.'

Thanks a bunch. How tolerant of you.

reply

And conservative jerks like yourself is why the Rocky Horror Picture is relevent after fifty years and your attitude toward Mrs. Cox is exactly why the casting was spot on.

reply

You can put a man on MARS, but it doesn't make him a MARTIAN

reply

Agreed. I think she's amazing. I'm not sure who else could have done it better.

reply

Tim Curry could have done it better, even suffering from the effects of his stroke. I was quite disappointed by Cox's performance after looking forward to it. Same with Reeve Carney as Riff Raff, loved him in Penny Dreadful and he mailed this one in.

reply

I don't know about worst but it's disappointing.

reply

I love her in this role!

reply

No one can play frank n furter like tim curry, no one has his presence. But that said, laverne cox is doing a great job with the character

reply

Actually, David Bedella did a fantastic job onstage in London. I'd say he was as good, if not better, than Curry.

reply

OMG, totally! David Bedella did a smashing job. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Now he totally sold the part and enjoyed what he was doing. To date, of all the productions I've seen, I've enjoyed David's the most. And he definitely rivaled the original.

Yaaaaas, she did the damn thing!

reply

Don't Dream It, Be It !!

Nobody is Tim Curry, but she made this her own role and she did a fantastic job!

reply

Absolutely! Nobody will ever be Tim Curry. She had bigger shoes to fill than she would have stepping into the role of Jareth after David Bowie.

Catch me when you can, Mishter Lusk.

reply

Exactly, Perfect Comparison Point !!

reply

Yes, Tim Curry had a certain bravado about him that was sadly missing with Laverne Cox.

Careful man there's a beverage here!

reply

The problem is precisely that she loved every minute of her performance. Yes, she's expressive, but she played the role like a big, flamboyant drag queen. Tim Curry was undeniably campy, but you always had the feeling that he could snap at any second and violently murder you. With Laverne Cox, the only threat is that you might get bitchslapped. She doesn't have the menace that the part requires (which I've seen other actors pull off in stage productions). And don't get me started on the horrible British Southern Belle accent. I was trying to keep an open mind, but my disappointment with this movie swung into high gear the moment Cox made her big entrance.

reply

THIS.

reply

That is a fantastic and wonderfully civil criticism of the performance rather than of the actress herself. Thank you for that. I agree that the production would have fared better had there been the air of menace that was present in the original - but, for the overall, amped-up campy atmosphere that this production seemed to want to create, she did fairly well in the role.

reply

Yes!!!

Get away from her, you BITCH!!!

reply

I agree. I was expecting great even though I've never seen Cox in anything else. However, the problem with Cox's performance is that Cox cannot sing. Also, it doesn't make much sense for Frank-N-Furter to be played by someone who presents as a woman.

Listen up Fives...a Ten is speaking.

reply

Perfect Critique. This is exactly what I wanted to say but much more eloquently put. No hate for Cox but the only thing she had down were the outfits and the smile. She'd have had the singing if not for the terrible accent.

reply

Yes! I was thinking Laverne Cox was too drag green. Tim Curry had a smoldering sexuality that showed through, I think that was missing. The rest was like the Glee version.
