We want the Hercules from the myths... Not this rip off

So we went to see the new Hercules movie yesterday... Took my dad since the Steve Reeves classic was one of his favorites from his childhood... Hoped that modern Hollywood would give us something impressive with all their special effects and all... The preview clearly indicated that Hercules' labors are going to be shown... which is essentially what every person who read the myths was anxious to see... SPOILERS AHEAD... We came into the theater with great expectations to see something amazing... What we got was a rip off fantasy movie with those things from the previews happening in the span of 10 seconds in flashbacks... then we got a plot that is loosely based (and I am being kind here) on the Greek legends... otherwise totally fabricated... Hell, Arnold's Conan was more convincing! Steve Reeves classic Hercules, though, lacked special effects at least had some solid story line...

I address the Hollywood here... Give us a Hercules movie that actually shows the hero as he is portrayed in the Myths... we want to see the 12 labors... one by one... we want to see a detailed battle with the lion, hydra, boar... Cerberus, etc. and the moment Hercules replaced Atlas for a little while... WE WANT THAT!!! While you are at it... Hollywood, please decide the fate of the Dark Tower movie, series, whatever... tired of waiting!!!!!!!!!!
They never found the second dose!

I also expected at least something around new Conan (which was stupid) or Clash/Wrath of the Titans (which was stupid yet very enjoyable)... but this... this is wrong.
Now I know that this piece of rubbish was based upon comic book (I won't touch it even with a stick!), but I went to see that movie WITHOUT that information (congrats to producers) so I treated as a movie based upon actual Greek myths! And when I saw it, I thought that producers did not put much faith in Dwanye since they throw him between such ridiculous, poorly written characters! I believe that The Rock could and should play the part based purely on mythology. He can do it!

This, this movie sucks epically. Luckily we won't even remember it next summer (hopefully).

Producers stripped Troy out of magic and gods and let Orlando Bloom's character to love happily ever after with Helen of Troy, but at least they had better characters.

2/10
From pity.

I wouldn't mind one based on the Legend. But then again. Do i really want to watch that much gay sex.

Ignorance was never a virtue.

Well it is true that Hercules had many gay lovers. Including his own Nephew, Iolaus. And While i got nothing against gays. I think a lot people have something against Incest. Frankly i think the reason why there has never been a movie that is 100% like the Myth. IS Because they have to make the character relatable to modern audiences. Its not like we live in the year 1000 BC Anymore.

The most complicated, and most humane aspect of Herakles(Hercules) myth is the struggle between Herakles' virtue and vice. The contrast between the tragic insanity that made Herakles kill his family, his violent, hot temper and rage breakdowns that made him murder many people (not only in battle), and on the other side, his compassion, sense of justice, fairness, his self criticism, as well as his persistence, patience and fortitude. He is very complex character, much more than a dumb brute all these comic books/comic book inspired movies make him be. But, I guess, that is far to much for average sword and sandal CGI porn.

Now it isn't that he is unreleatable to us, but unreleatable to black and white movie heroes of ever so righteous Holywood. He would be very relatable to us, if someone serious would actually make a movie about Herakles, but for grown ups.

As for homosexuality. I do understand how western Europeans and especially US Americans are being fed this constantly since those societies try really, really hard to establish some ancient base for the modern acceptability of homosexuals. Although I support the LGBT acceptance, I don't agree with that agenda as the history is what suffers.

But Hin erakles' myth, all such claims, as with Achilles, come very late in ancient history, after centuries of regular storytelling, in the period when there was such trend by leading writers to rewrite old stories and adjust them to the taste of public, which obviously loved ''spicy'' stories. Ancient Greece had a thousand year old history. And things changed there, and changed often. Now grown men homosexual relation was always a taboo in Greece, but there was time and place (not by any means universal) where pederasty wasn't taboo. Also, Hellenistic and Roman era of Greek history seem to have been much more liberal than the previous centuries, especially Archaic times when all those stories were born, or at least written down.

None of the famous stories of from 700-450 BC, including one of Herakles, have any homosexual undertone yet alone full ''well known'' homosexual relationships. All that we can take from Herakles myth, at least in its original forms, is that he had many women, and wasn't faithfull to his wife.

Well since it was a myth and we all seen it, there is no point making a similar movie.

The new Hercules (2014) give us a sense of real reality that every son of God was man made. It was all about the story teller brainwashing us and its up to us to accept it or go "hmmmm nope I'm smarter than that"

This movie kinda remind me Jesus. He ended up dying because his own people got jealous and plotted his death. "If it bleed, it can be kill" even if hes a son of God and we all know those that died on the cross has to experienced the most horrific pain imaginable.

WHERE? WHERE IS THIS MOVIE WITH GOOD CGI? WHERE CAN I FIND THIS HERCULES MOVIE WITH CGI CREATURES?

reply

Odd I wanted to watch this since it was a realistic version of the myths.

I WANTED THAT! I did not want another movie about magic and special powers.

Ok. Zeus is black now? I'm not a racict, but ancient greeks were white people and no way in hell they worshipped black god.

Why on earth would you expect anything amazing from a Hollywood flick starring Dwayne Johnson?

**Contains mild spoilers**

I personally loved the film. The myth of Hercules has been done over & over again, literally the same telling. Now, this film comes along, and does a twist on it, which is what I loved about it. I didn't know of the comic it was based on until after I bought the DVD. Having a fresh retelling should make it more appealing, IMO, but you like what you like. The best part of the film for me was how the story took away the Greek God element, and made Herc into a mortal man, someone who was a mercenary & had a group of mercenaries with him. The extended cut of film was a lot of fun to watch & is a great addition to the sword & sandal genre.

what movie has been done about the myth? where? with CGI and a big budget? where is that movie? please tell me.

Hollywood can remake Dracula like more than 20 times, but making a Faithful Hercules is just out of the question?

reply

Yes the trailer is misleading, but i read a couple of reviews of the film before i saw it and was aware the 12 labors is NOT what the film is about.

I mean, do people go and see films without reading reviews first?!!!

That does seem kind of dumb.

As it happened i quite liked the film.
