It May Fit With Current Entertainment Thinking But Is It Entirely Realistic That You'd Send A Lone...

... Female out on an initial exploration on behalf of an enclosed society looking to examine how harsh the literal outside world is from their comfort zone?

Now, I appreciate you aren't supposed to be able to ask this question and indeed some people on here will no doubt be frothing at the mouth as they furiously hammer away at their keyboards, questioning the sexist nature of this question.

But the thing is - and don't get me wrong, I've written many a post / thread arguing against the anti-wokester brigade on a number of subjects - is it at all realistic that you'd send a lone, slender-ish female out alone to explore an unknown, potentially harsh and hostile, environment?

I mean, this is supposed to be real life, not a movie where she'd be all sing, dancing, kung fu-ing, etc. So is this an unrealistic premise?

Or is it realistic? Is this a possible life imitating art sort of thing? Could we get to a future where we become so conditioned to female supremacy, that we'd actually leave some hulking big muscly black dude say, kicking his heels in a vault, and send out a little white girl to get a measure of things?

Again, apologies if this is offensive to anyone - I appreciate we're not supposed to be able to raise such a question...

In the Fallout game series the gender of anyone doesn't really matter...unless you unlock perks with your character.

reply

Maybe she's relying on a Charisma build. :P

Fallout isn't realisitc; I don't need the movie to be. As long as it follows the internal logic of the show/games, and as long as it maintains the dark comic tone and lore, I'm in.

Please be aware that the people within the vault are for at least 200 years in the vault. Several generations within a closed community. They have basically no clue about the outer world and how bad it can be. No one knows that. So whoever gets out of the bunker is totally unprepared and naive. So I basically don't see a problem with the premise here.
And considering that and its origin as video game, the protagonist is always a Mary Sue. The Vault Dweller, The Chosen One and the Lone Wanderer are all huge Mary Sues. The Fallout 4 Sole Survivor at least lived in the old world and can theoretically can learned all the skills needed, but the other ones were basically blank slates who become super important without any reason except they are the player. So what do you expect from the show?

reply

Precisely.

That's why I was wondering if it was realistic proposition, the first one out being a physically unremarkable female.

I am aware of the origin being a video game - several of which I've played. I'm just questioning whether it's a realistic premise for the TV show. If we consider the community which would choose to send an individual out.

reply

You have to expect a relative small group of people, who are teached that outside of the bunker the world will be bad. They don't know and can't comprehend what this mean, but this is the teaching for them for generations. Additionally usually Vault-Tec had done some experiments with the inhabitants, so we don't know, if they are just a control group, but this would be very unlikely. So we can assume that they are somehow messed up, maybe just by doing a gender swap hormone thing? Who knows.
But even if not, they are definitely for generations down there. So you can think of them like (potentially) better educated typical Hillbillies. They also not leave their town and have many prejudice against anything out there. So we can assume that here too. And thus I don't think it is too far fetched, that the only one who wants to leave is the girl we saw. It is not that she is send out as "THE CHOSEN ONE", but because she is the only one who is willing to leave. This can be 100% a girl or a boy.

And why would they not stop her? Maybe Vault-Tec just did an empowering test with the Vault, giving them all the girl power stuff, we see nowadays. I have no doubts, that a population with this inductriation for several generations wouldn't see a problem in sending out a female.
From the few in Vault pics we saw, it looks at least, they have a normal society, so nothing which let us believe, that there is like a brute king reigning with power. And on every Conan movie, we have 2 Farmboy movies. A farmboy has imo as much of a chance as any normal farmgirl. So I have no problem with this premise, the execution is important.

reply

for a TV show, it's definitely realistic - anything goes on TV, just like in the videogame world

reply

there's a problem with your premise though

if the vault is still functional and they deliberately send a female into the world of unknown because woke science - they kinda deserve to go extinct

a vault with still functional hive mind, however, would send the strongest, most durable member into the wilds on this scouting mission

So, no - this film is not 'realistic' as far as real world logic is concerned. If they wanted to send a female out there, they should have used one of the previously used premises - where vault malfunctioned, one female was exited from the cryochambers due to a mistake - every other chamber was on the brink of failure (death), so she went out to find a way to fix the vault

Again though - hollywood - it is no longer attached to reality - it's been a decade like that now - even historical pieces to them are akin to woke fantasy land.

reply

I never said anything of a woke agenda, I said, in a non biased environment man and woman are basically identical. The vault offers such, as there is no external danger (usually) or the need to do hard work. That has nothing with woke to do, only decadence.

reply

Assuming they did sports at the vault - or general exercise, the reality regarding one's speed/strength and physical endurance would become apparent very quickly.

Nature is very biased in that regard.

If it is a very woke vault, it's possible that exercise was omitted from daily routines, in which case you are right. At the same time, when puberty comes, there is simply no way to hide that men end up growing up bigger and stronger (stronger even if the same size) than women.

The question is - is it possible to hide simple biology in a vault setting? I can see certain steps towards that in the real world - gender is now.... an illusion, according to many new normal biologists and sociologists.
Where that leads should be very interesting.

Having said that - is it possible for a female to be a better sharpshooter than most men? Yes.
Is it possible for a female to be smarter than most men? I'd argue yes.
It's possible that these attributes were the primary decisive factors for the vault dwellers.
Besides - and this is important - according to the synopsis, her father was missing - she went out there not because vault was about to die, but simply due to family matter, so it actually doesn't matter who went - it was seen as a suicide mission - so as far as the plot is concerned (I haven't seen the series yet), I have no problem with a chick heading out at all - because again, this wasn't a vault-saving mission.

reply

If you have no clue what dangers you expect outside, why would you think, that strength/speed will help you? Vaults are small and stuff, where you have to lift heavy things are sparse in such a vault, so they can't imagine why any strength above average is just so seldom used that no one would consider it. We of course know many situations where strength help us, but for them strength is potentially just a useless skill like growing hair. You just don't use it, so people don't know what it is good for. So it will be not high in their list.

reply

Well, assuming they are still human - with conflicts and such. In any conflict - or domestic dispute, a dude always ends up being a winner - unless dudes in that timeline/vault have all been puberty blocked, in which case anything goes.

I can easily imagine a scenario where they all breed children in artificial wombs - and all boys are essentially being chemically feminized for equality.

Anyways, as I've already explained - the vault is not in danger, it's a family matter - no issues with female heading out on her own in this scenario.

reply

The vaults have guns, so any revolt was usually easily controlled by the faction who controlled the guns.

reply

I'm looking forward to when a bunch of raiders run a train on the protagonist.

reply

And the mutants would do worse.

reply

Personally, I like women, and I'd rather watch them than men under just about any circumstances. I don't give damn if it's "realistic" or not. I certainly don't expect realism from a series based on the Fallout series.

Female out on an initial exploration on behalf of an enclosed society looking to examine how harsh the literal outside world is from their comfort zone?

Do you even play any Fallout game?

In some games the protagonist wasn't sent on behalf of a society, they escape to search family or something terrible happened in the vault.

And Fallout is comedy, nothing is serious, everything is tongue in cheek with dark humor.

In real life: not without proper recon and training, no. But they turned a dark, violent, serious game into this stupid fucking comedy like Twisted Metal, so it becomes a big piece of "whatever" shit.

The player character can literally be a woman in the fallout games

And Fallout has always been semi-silly

reply

His question was about reality. :-) I should have separated the second sentence for clarity.

>The player character can literally be a woman in the fallout games

Yes, I know. I'm guilty of doing this in many games, especially when I was younger and horny as shit.

>And Fallout has always been semi-silly

Honestly, I never really noticed that. The closest I can remember is the dark sarcasm conversation responses in Fallout 4. "Like yeah, I could help you, but I'd rather help your mother first. Fuck you."

So it's no different than the games here.

You never noticed a game with big green super mutants that act like dumb hulk-type characters? And the absurd radio stations?

You can literally set your characters intelligence to 0 in many Fallout games and play the game like an idiot, choosing comical dialogue choices.
