Could never really get into this franchise
First time I heard about "Wicked" was in the early 2000s, upon recommendation from my drama teacher. However, when I read up on the synopsis of the book, I found the story somewhat troubling. It got worse when I read up on it on wikipedia. It's like a really bad version of the "Star Wars" prequels, but with a Wizard of Oz skin. They had a lot of stuff in the book apparently, that was not really fit for kids to read. Some even said it could qualify as a "soft porn" story.
When I heard it had been turned into a Broadway play, I couldn't imagine how they could show such a story on stage when people bring their families to watch stuff like that. Turns out whoever translated the story to Broadway had to clean up the story a lot.
I still found it stupid, trying to have an entire backstory to make us feel sorry for the Wicked Witch of the West, when you know she's gonna turn irredeemably evil and die at the hands of Dorothy eventually. I'm also not a fan of showing Glinda as a shallow, spoiled, rich fairy going to college. Her story arc was ridiculous.
Then to make a movie and cast a pop singer I can't stand, and a black bitch nobody can stand sealed the deal on me never watching this.
I love the original 1939 Oz movie and the book just fine, but this? Forget it. Only redeeming quality it has is Glinda's costumes and that's it.
