It seems like he saw her from atop a hill (like in MM2) and delivered her to....who? Some common skuzbags living in the Citadel ground caves who used corpse maggots to sort out her stump?

Or did I get it wrong?

It could have been more like a maggot farm where they are using corpses to farm maggots. The woman is scraping them into a jar, so maybe they are eating the maggots for protein.

My point was more that Max is quite mercenary in his other iterations - with strangers anyway. Did he just rescue her out of the goodness of his heart?

no. he sold her. or traded her for something. it would be the fate of any fallen wounded in that hell hole.
