If an actual Zombie Apocalypse hits, what are you first going to do? Let's say it hits fast so you hear about zombies taking over a major city one day and have 24 hours to get ready.....GO!
I can't imagine dead tissue would hold up well in below freezing temperatures. Even if they're the type of zombies that aren't technically dead they're too stupid to put on a coat and wouldn't survive long. And yeah, the whole geographic aspect of it doesn't hurt either.
My first thought whenever watching a zombie movie/show is that the best thing to do is get to the coast, find a good ship/boat and take it to a small island (make sure you're armed before departing).
So for example, if you're in the Northeast, head to Nantucket or Block Island. If you're down in Florida, get to one of the keys, etc.
There's much less of a chance for zombies on an island, and even if there are a few, you can systematically eliminate them knowing there are a finite number on the island. Once you've gotten them all, the island should be safe as can be......unless they can swim (unlikely from most zombie films) or drive/sail a boat (even more unlikely). Even still, it's much easier to defend yourself on an island.
Once the island is clear, you're free to live in paradise.... :-)
First, I'd go clean house at a Gander Mountain and/or Green Top. Then, I'd find the closest Army base (luckily for me there is one 3 miles from my house) and find a well armored humvee and some heavy duty artillery. Then raid some stores, stock up on some water and other needed essentials. After that.... well, call me sadistic or crazy, but I'd have fun driving around killing some zombies.
With everything being so close to me, I could knock that all out by noon and have a nice little head start..
and of course no one else would have the same idea? i love how people think that they would be able to stroll down to the local gun shop and grab a bunch of guns then run over to walmart and get a bunch of supplies and then just ride on over to my deserted island. not going to happen. first off the question is stupid. how would you have 24 hours to prepare for a zombie apocolypse? by the time you have figured out what is going on itd likely be to late to do any of this, not because theres a zombie horde running around outside but because of the panicked human horde trying to do the same thing.there would be people infected who havent turned but would be among the crowds trying to get into gunshops and stores, itd be complete chaos.your best bet is to hunker down where you live with as much food and water as possible. you better have some weapons to fend off scavengers looking to get some supplies and keep the people that are with you to a minimum.you will have to sacrifice loved ones who you will just not be able to get to without endangering yourself or others with you. i live in an apartment building on the 6th floor and the first thing id do would be to close off the two doors that lead to the stairways and id disable the elevators.this wouldnt take too long so its possible. second thind id do is grab my pistol and go to each of the other apartments on my floor and look for infected or the sick and dispose of them immediately. anyone gets in the way they get it too.id grab all the food from any empty apartments and id fill jugs of water and put them in freezers.after the floor was secured id try to contact family members to see if they are alright or are able to make it to where i am. if this outbreak happened during the summer id try to survive till winter where id then be able to get outside with zombies being immobilized by the snow and cold.id look for supplies hopefully id get my hands on a cb radio and try to contact others and see whats happening.id explore very low key as there could be armed scavengers looking to take advantage of anyone they come across and i definitely wouldnt alert anyone to my home base.id try to help anyone i came across if i could and would bring back anyone with useful skills.
Well in my case, considering 90% of this town IS that army base, it's perfectly plausible that if an actual zombie outbreak were to occur these soldiers would be sent out leaving some areas of the base completely unprotected and unguarded. And considering I live a 10 minute walk away, I think I'd have first chance to stock up ;) .
I'm saving people. first family & friends and then just people in general. I'd try and bring them to a suburb of sorts. I live in NY so I'd send them off to Westchester or something stock up at Stew Leonards and such. Hopefully get my hands on a bus so I can transport everyone.
In the meantime I'm in NY trying to get as many people out as I can. I imagine its worldwide panic... hopefully the virus doesnt start in NY cause then they're gonne IamLegend me & blow up the bridges.
If there is a zombieapocalypse the most important thing for people to do is survive & not lose their minds. I'd hopefully save enough people to start a new civilization.
I feel in cases like this you have to worry about the zombies but also the people... People become unstable and only think about themselves.
Id try and keep everyone calm and let them know that if we can't survive here together then mankind has no chance of surviving...
Also when I start my new civilization..."when" ...there will be no religions. Start from scratch... Before the world ends id get my hands on seeds, soil oh and id want to build an arc and save all the animals so we have something to hunt and eat when all is said and done.
Well, I'm pretty lucky in that I used to work at a firearms and military supply store for 6 years and over that time amassed a fair-sized collection of equipment and weapons, including: - Heckler & Koch HK416 5.56mm (14.5" barrel version) w/ Surefire M900 Tactical Flashlight Foregrip (125/250lumen bulb and 30lumen navigational red/blue LED), EOTech 512 Holographic Sight, 12 30round MagPul Clear Plastic magazines, AN/PEQ2 Visual/Infrared Laser Aiming Module, and MagPul Carbon Fiber 6-Position "Crane" stock, Knight's Armaments QD Sound Suppressor - Accuracy International L96 chambered in .338Lapua w/ Leupold 5-25x40 auto-compensating (wind/elevation/bullet drop) scope, AI folding spring-loaded bipod, 10 5round magazines - Benelli M3 Super90 12guage Shotgun w/ Barrel Shortened by 4", Folding Stock, Surefire Tactical Flashlight Foregrip (100/200lumen bulb or 20lumen LED navigational bulb), EOTech Holo Sight, ~150 shells, mostly 00Buck and Slug, with a few Sabot Slugs thrown in (higher velocity but smaller projectile) - Sig Sauer P226 Combat TB (threaded barrel) chambered in .357Sig w/ Surefire Pistol Light (120lumen), Knights Armaments Sound Suppressor and 8 15round magazines - Taurus Raging Bull Revolver Model 444 6" Barrel in Blued Steel chambered in .44 Magnum w/ Picatinny Rail for mounting optional sights/scopes - SVI Infinity Double-Stack 5" Barrel Custom 1911/2011 chambered in .45ACP w/ Titanium Frame and Blued SS Slide, Trijicon Low-Profile Pistol Sight and Green Laser, 2.5lb Trigger Pull, Gold-Plated Barrel, and 5 14round magazines
I have some other weapons, such as 2 other shotguns, 5 rifles, 4 handguns, and 3 "assault rifles", but the ones above are my favourites :)
Not to mention plenty of tactical vests in various configurations (mostly BlackHawk), 2 Kevlar vests, everything from gloves to kneepads, belts to every kind of pouch you can think of. 3 different sets of radios with ranges up to 5 miles, plenty of Balaclavas as well as Bolle Tactical Goggles (gotta keep the zombie guts out of my eyes!). About 20 sets of BDU's of various design, from traditional green woodland camo to the new urban "digital print" BDU's. A full set of riot gear, including the bulletproof shield, helmet, and faceplate.
During that time I also competed in amateur level shooting competitions, everything from Practical Pistol to Tactical Room Clearing to Extremely Long-Range Shooting (as in, 1000+ yards). So when it comes to defending myself and my loved ones, I'd say I'm pretty well set, at least in that respect.
First thing I'd do is make sure my family and girlfriend are safe, board up the house and bolt shut every door and cover every first-floor window with plates of steel. I'd set a sniping perch out of my attic window, which is tinted but opens. Then I'd hook up the generators and make sure only the necessities are running. Following that, I'd gear up, covering every inch of skin with at least two layers of cloth, strap on my HK416 and 12 magazines of ammo, my Benelli with about 40 shells pouched up, strap my L96 across my back with about 40 rounds, put my Sig in my drop-leg holster and the .44mag revolver in my backpack. Then I'd grab a friend, equip them with as much tactical gear and weapons as they can hold (rifle/shotgun/handgun at least) and we'd head to the Pharmacy and fill 2 duffel bags full of everything from the safe (opiates, amphetamines, all the controlled substances... tens of thousands of pills) and a bunch of antibiotics/antivirals. Then we'd head back to base, lock the newly acquired pharmacy in the basement, and head out to get as much food and ammunition as possible, and with there being both 2 supermarkets and 3 gun stores within 2 miles of my home, we should be well-set. After that, we'd hunker down and just survive.
Good point about the water. I'd probably put about 2 dozen rain catchers on the roof of the place I'd be staying. Before I find a better place to stay than my house, I'd have to work out some safe transportation. I'd have to get myself and 7 other people transported, so it would take 2 cars, the one in front being the "scout" vehicle (quicker, smaller, weaponized) and the second being the "transport" vehicle (bigger, heavily armored, weaponized).
The first vehicle would be my neighbors BMW X5 4.8is (407hp twin-turbo V8), and its double-sunroof offers two places to mount weapons (I'm assuming that in scavenging, my companions and I have collected more weapons than just the ones I already own, hopefully including a few heavy machine guns from the military base near-by). I would find some way to lightly armor the vehicle, although it's already pretty sturdy, fast, and sits fairly high so running over a zombie is no problem. I would definitely add some kind of protective bars along the front of the car, like ram bars, but with more cross-bars, as well as adding steel/aluminum plating on the entire bottom of the vehicle to protect any components from zombie guts. Assuming I'd gotten some heavy weapons, I'd mount a forward-facing M240 (7.62mm 900rpm belt-fed machine gun) and the rear sunroof would be used with a hand-held weapon in case additional fire-support is needed. The trunk would be stocked with all my personal weaponry as well as hopefully some guns taken from the stores/police stations/military base, as well as everything acquired from the pharmacy. In this vehicle would be myself, my girlfriend, and two other people to help with scouting/manning the guns.
The second vehicle would be another neighbors RV, in which my family and any other survivors we find would ride. All of the sides would have 1" steel plating welded onto them, and the windows replaced with 1.5" thick Plexiglass. The front would have spiked ram bars, and the bottom would have similar armor plating to the X5. The wheels would be swapped for truck wheels, and the suspension modified for all of the extra weight. Since its a higher-end RV, I'm assuming the engine is strong enough to carry all of this extra weight. If not, I'd find a way to either turbo or supercharge it to make sure it can keep up with the scout vehicle. There would be 4" thick steel-rod "fencing" all the way around the top, 4" high, allowing people to provide fire support from a more advantageous angle. On the front of this "fence" would be mounted an M2HB Browning .50cal Machine Gun (half-inch bullets strong enough to pierce medium-armor and a rate of fire of 600rpm) with a swivel turret and a welded-in chair behind it (with a seat belt of course). The sides would each have mounting-points for M240/M249 (7.62vs5.56) machine guns, and the back would have a unique side-by-side dual-mounted Saiga 12ga shotguns so that the person firing them can have each buttstock against each shoulder and each hand around the handle and trigger. They'd each be equipped with high-capacity 40rd drum magazines, one loaded with 00 Buck and the other with deer slugs, and a central Reflex Sight would be affixed that aims for both of them. The inside would have significant modifications done to provide more space, more safety, and a few gun-slots in strategic positions for hand-held weapons to be used on anything that gets too close.
We would take these vehicles to the most fortified place we can find, hopefully surrounded by a concrete fence 10' high with barbed wire atop. Along the way, we would stop at any gunstores, pharmacies, hospitals/veterinarians, or smaller food stores and take everything of use (weapons, ammo, food, and all of the Scheduled Drugs (morphine and other opiates, amphetamines, etc) as well as every kind of antibiotic/antiviral medication. Our new place would have to have a basement, the aforementioned fence, at least 2 floors above ground, rooftop access, and be in a relatively remote area.
We would settle down there, and then myself and two others would venture out when necessary, armed to the teeth (myself with my weapons mentioned in the previous post, the others with weapons we acquired later, hopefully at least some M4A1's with holo-sights and rail-systems, pump-action or semi-auto shotguns, .45cal handguns, and suppressed 9mm handguns, with one person carrying a light machine gun, such as an M249 with 4-500 rounds).
WOW You freakin rednecks are funny! GUNS GUNS GUNS!! Did you get a letter jacket for your hill billy war starter package? Although it would more than likely be a flannel shirt with the sleeves cut off. But hey people would know your cool!
Did any of you consider that if there were some kind of crazy zombie out break the chances of it being a biological would be like 99%. Which means it would very easily spread into the atmosphere.. Your plan to collect rain may need a lil help.
"You shoot me in the face and I'll kick your ass!!"
Hey man, no need to hate... This is all pure fantasy, and just because someone has a knowledge of firearms and when someone asks what they would do in the event of a zombie outbreak is "guns/shelter/water/food/medicine" doesn't make them a redneck. I would venture to say that, having worked in a firearm store (although we primarily dealt with law enforcement), about 75% of the civilians who came in to BUY a firearm were middle-class or upper-middle-class, had good credit and solid background checks, the other 25% that were lower class were primarily hunters. However, 98.5% of the people who came in that I would classify as "rednecks" or "hillbillies" didn't buy a single thing, they just wanted to touch everything and talk about guns for hours... Not learn about them, just try and impress us workers with what they thought they knew... God help you if you tried to correct them, which had to be done about twice every sentence. But rarely if ever did they actually BUY anything.
1.i would try to find a suitable building/area with defensible position, 2.find a local hardware store and take tools, wood, metal etc. barracade the place up. 3.for electricity i'll gett generators and try to find solar panels or try to mcgyver a treadmill to charge battery's, the generater. 4.goto a gun shop and hopefully theres any reliable guns left, load up on guns, ammo, gear. 5.head to a local supermarket and scalvage the remaining food that is left. 6.if i found any survivers that are help full they could tag along and try to expand
I'd get to water, deep water, fast. I'd live on a type of houseboat where the zombies couldn't walk along the bottom of the bay, or harbor. If the water were deep, I wouldn't have to be far out in the water. In fact, i could be just a few feet from shore and still be safe. I could sleep safely and move along the shore safely to find supplies. And I'd learn to fish.
And eventaully, I'd head to Holywood. Not to find Bill Murrey, but Margo Harshman or Danielle Panabaker. If they were zombies, I'd double tap em to get them out of their misery. If they were not, I'd comvince them to join me on my houseboat.
I like the idea of the houseboat, although I personally would probably use it more as a means of transportation during long-term scouting expeditions. If not a houseboat, then I'd go for as nice of a yacht as I could get my hands on, hoping at least for a 70-footer or so. Mount up a couple of .30cal and .50cal machine guns, along with perhaps an automatic 40mm grenade launcher, and anyone going ashore would have fire support from a moving vessel.
Find some way to attach solar panels to as much of the top of the boat as possible and the need for gasoline could be diminished, or at least at night the engines could be turned off without losing power for lights, the kitchen (galley?), search/spot-lights, etc.
