Chances of it being a hit?

First one was a huge success because it tricked fans into thinking it was about the actual Joker from the Batman universe, when instead they just took an existing script about a pathetic loser and social outcast and gave it names related to the Batman universe.

What are the chances this sequel will be a hit, especially as a musical and with the miscast generic, odd, non-binary looking Gaga playing one of the hottest characters from the comics?

reply

It'll probably do well after it comes out, out of people being curious, but I can see business dropping off. I don't know how popular musicals are.

reply

Not very. But they’re still trying to push this as an authentic Joker, so we’ll see what happens.

reply

"because it tricked fans into thinking it was about the actual Joker from the Batman universe"

No, it was a hit because it was a movie which had something to say, instead of being just 2,5 hrs of mindless CGI-fighting.

reply

What did it have to say? Pathetic, sad, bullied outcasts become mass shooters?

We knew that watching the news.

People want to be entertained. Not see reality unfolding. Keep that type of storyline in the indie films no one watches except a few Academy members.

And this would have been one of those if not for the Batman connection.

reply

I get it, Joker wasn't for you. You want to be entertaaained. Joker drew in different kind of crowd. There is still people who don't drool over the latest advances of digital image processing. People with some intelligence left. Success of Oppenheimer is another proof there's still market outside of mindless CGI-drivel. But don't worry, the current state of film industry isn't changing any time soon, so people like you will find plenty of movies to watch.

reply

Nope. It was Batman fans expecting the actual Joker. They discovered too late it wasn’t.

reply

It wouldn't have reached a billion mark, word of mouth would have killed it.

reply

I'm with you pjl69. Someone must have liked it cuz it went over a billion dollars. For it to make that kind of money, you had to have a lot of non- comic book fans checking it out. If it was a phony rip off, it would have disappeared quickly.

Having said that, I personally didn't care for it. But that's just my taste.

reply

You lost the entire argument by being a condescending prick. Just because someone doesn’t like something that you do, it doesn’t mean they aren’t intelligent.

reply

If it's a story that's not just "more of the same" it could do well. I think it would be wise to keep the story R rated as that's the tone already established.

reply

I don't know, but it probably isn't very expensive movie, so it doesn't need huge box office numbers to turn profit. And I'm sure the studio can take some losses after the first movie numbers alone.

reply

If it's more character driven it won't be expensive to make. If the Liberal media gives this movie a lot of free press like they did the first time a lot of people will go see it. Remember Joker was labeled as a dangerous movie as the media said it was made for incels.

Chads and Karens will love this movie.

reply

It will be a hit. The first was a hit because word got around of an amazing performance from Joaquin Phoenix and Robert Deniro.

reply

Nah. They both give amazing performances in other films too which made very little at the box office.

Neither, especially Deniro, has enough drawing power to pull in over a billion.

The two films Phoenix did since Joker only made $4.5 and $11.5 million.

reply

If you mean anything like the first 'profit margin', I doubt it, that was a one-hit piece.

reply

I agree.

reply

You'd be surprised.. Millennials & Gen Z might eat this up just because it's a Musical

reply

if more like The Original/Remake of West Side Story it should do well I just hope its less Incelly

reply

I think it'll do well. There's Phoenix's already Oscar-winning characterisation, plus Lady Gaga as Harley will be a big draw.
