What's with all the dialog directed at the audience?

I felt like every other line of dialog was directed at the audience, rather than characters interacting with each other. Seriously, characters literally say "Warner Brothers told us we were going to make another The Matrix without us, so we had no choice," and in the context of the movie that's supposed to mean Thomas Anderson's video game called "The Matrix." Or "The Matrix [game] was a thinly veiled critique of capitalism, yo." "No no! It was actually a rejection of binary sexuality!" basically copying and arguably making fun of clickbait headlines from the meta discussion over the films.

I swear at one point a character looks at camera and says, "Wow Neo, I wasn't sure if fans would accept you with long hair and a beard, but it's totally working for me in this new The Matrix sequel!"

reply

It was trying VERY hard to be meta.

The first act was, then they abandoned all those ideas. I think they realized they needed a plot

reply

I'm still not sure what the plot was.

After revolutions, machines had a truce with the humans.

Machines had civil war.

The winning side was like, fuck the agreement. Let's kill zion.

Winning side created a new Matrix, based on Neo and Trinity.

Neo neo escapes the Matrix, and then tries to get Trinity out too. Succeeds.

Everything you just said happened in a timeline before this movie, except the very last line. You just described the plot to a movie that happened off screen. That is a very poorly developed plot.

I didn't say it was a great plot. lol.

reply

Lol, that's fair.

reply

I miss so some details, it wasn't holding my attention but had no clue what was going on

reply

It was a bit disappointing since they actual plot they came up with wasn't particularly substantial.

reply

I think the plot was literally just "lets get Trinity out".

reply

The moment I realized that that was the case...I was like...shit...*sighs*

This is how I felt watching The Last Jedi the moment when I realized that the ship was going to be stuck the entire film.

reply

Exactly how it felt.

reply

He is no longer Tomas Anderson, he is John Wick

reply

More like Silverhand for me :D

nice!

I think Warner Bros line was taken from the real life pitch meeting for Matrix 4.

The Wachowkis really didn't want to do a fourth film, but decided to do it anyways because WB would get someone else do it regardless.

So Lana purposely made the film bad to get back at WB, which is who the line is actually directed towards.
