Americans can't read ?

I'm sorry but I got to ask this question... why was This movie remade in an American version (Quarantine) ? What? Are Americans to lazy to go to a movie which they have to read? Or is "Hollywood" to scared to acknowledge that there was a great movie made outside of the United States ? Because I have to say , I lived in America for 4 years and you people really *beep* on foreign films

Say yes to whim ! Say yes to chance ! Say yes to Chaos !

English is my first language, and I've enjoyed quite a few subtitled foreign films, including [Rec] (2007), the original/Spanish version of Quarantine (2008). Here in the US, many things (including non-English language films) are remade, but improvement isn't always the end result.

I agree with those who find that Quarantine (2008) is weaker in some places than [Rec] (2007). But as I see virtues in each film, there is also a sense that the American remake may have a slightly scarier edge (Jennifer Carpenter's home-run ending). It's almost as frightening as where the US falls in World Education rankings. Now that's pretty spooky.

Quarantine wasn't made because Americans can't read. It was made, because studios need to make movies to make money, and they prefer to "steal" ideas that have been successful. It is the safer bet than rolling out an original concept that might bomb. A purely money motivated decision made by studios is not representative of the literacy level of the American populace.

I can't read or write.

What? You expect Americans to READ while they're watching movies? Are you insane?

Not to bash Americans -- h*ll, I'm one myself -- as far as "entertainment" goes, but many Americans just "eat" what's put in front of them...which explains the seeming popularity of crappy "reality TV" and mediocre movies. Some folks just want to see good-looking people kissing or killing each other & blow up stuff real good.

Ironic considering this version lets the audience read about the cult and doesn't beat people over the head with a tape recording explaining everything.

Yes we can read just fine, but in my opinion REC sucked, only part that was better on REC was the ending it gave a little more info on what was going on, even though the American version it was a virus created by a teacher that wanted to make a statement. I seen REC and it was slow, boring and the acting was lame, even worse the English dubbing was worse than a 4th grade translation. So as i said in my opinion it was remade better, the only thing good about REC was the idea.

Some people are just plain lazy. Even James Rolfe (the Angry Video Game Nerd) admitted to it when talking about Godzilla movies. Yeah, the dubbing is cheesy, but he's too lazy to read with movies that are mainly "fun".

I actually think that Rec is better. I look at it this way (the major differences).

Pacing - Rec has this mainly because they spend less time in the fire station and get to the action a lot faster.

Lead actress - Both did a fine job. I'll say it's even. The only difference I could see is that the Spanish gal was hotter.

The rest of the cast is a mixed-bag, so I focused on the lead since you see her first and last.

Make-up - Quarantine actually wins here. The infected looked way creepier.

Sequel - Rec 2 is better than Quarantine 2, IMHO. Q2 was enjoyable, but I still think Rec 2 was better.

Aside from that, there are minor differences (you never see the camera-man in Rec, you do in Quarantine). All in all, I wish I had watched rec first.
