It's like a fan made film and a bad one at that. Don't get me started on the acting and dialogue. Some scenes were just fucking weird like the flashback stuff at the beginning.
Laughably awful stuff and I'm only at the hour mark. And what's with all the Z list actors taking centre stage like Anythony Michael Hall.
I'm guessing that long time fans of the first Halloween only will hate it. Me, I think only the first and third films are worth anyone's time. I actually liked Season of the Witch. The mistake they made was attaching it to the Halloween franchise.
I completely agree.. Season of the Witch is fantastic and creeps me out more that any of the other Halloween's. I haven't seen Kills yet so I will still hold judgement.
I just fast forwarded my way through H3 after I wrote my comment, stopping at the memorable scenes. It's just as good as I remember. Very creepy and Tom Atkins is super cool in his typical ordinary way.
Yeah I often tell people who aren't keen to watch it not as a Halloween film but as something separate. I wasn't keen the first time I saw it because there was no Michael Myers but I think it's a good 80s horror
I saw the original in the theater in 1978 and I don't think that any sequels should have been made. I just finished watching this movie and it was horrible. It's as if the people who wrote the script, filmed, and acted, never actually studied movies or acting formally. It was painfully bad to watch.
The kills were good, and Michael looks great, but other than that, it's kinda flat.
****SPOILERS AHEAD****
Going in, I was really excited for the flashback scenes, but they were pretty disappointing. It didn't feel like 1978. It felt like 2021 people pretending it was 1978. Why would these cops be having these conversations during a manhunt? Also, the flashback Loomis was awful, IMO. The actor and dialogue felt like he was trying to do Shakespeare or something. It just didn't fit. And the last little nitpick is, as a fan who appreciates detail, why didn't they add the bullet holes to Michael's jump suit? Dr. Loomis shoots him 6 times, so would it really be that difficult to poke some holes in the costume? Maybe a little blood?
I especially agree with your point about the cops having those conversations in the flashback. There's a superhuman killer on the loose for fuck's sake.
See I thought the 1978 part was cool. The way the cops were talking felt like a tongue-in-cheek nod to the way middle America “was” back in the day — like Leave It To Beaver or something.
I will admit overall the writing was questionable. Felt like a hodgepodge, and like a first draft many times.
What the fuck was that shit with Big John and Little John? Myers really didn't like Big John it seems. And then all the townspeople chasing some poor fat balding homeless guy somehow thinking he was Myers.
This was complete crap. Oh and the ending where the townspeople come together and are triumphant but a few minutes later they're all killed.
One of the weirdest "big name" movies I have ever seen. We're introduced to these nice ordinary folk just so Myers can mutilate them horribly a few minutes later. Big sick in my opinion.
Oh and I just remembered. The cops and Loomis were just about to finish Myers for good back in 1978 but Will Patton's character saves him. I mean what the actual fuck?
Agreed, the screenplay was so terribly written which was also true of the 2018 film as well but not to this extent. It’s like they just went with the first draft and thought ‘who cares, Michael kills a bunch of people, it’ll do.’
So much of the stuff you listed just went nowhere and felt like complete filler to pad out the running time.
The bald guy they were chasing was actually the other escaped prisoner from the prison bus that Michael was on in the 2018 film, I think his mugshot is seen on the TV at one point. Even still it was so silly that people were so scared they assumed he was Michael. Just so so dumb.
Any 21st century Art Form using a popular 20th century IP is gonna read or watch more like Fan Fiction because thats exactly what they are. Comic Books, Movies, even Pro Wrestling has this problem now where the innovators are gone and the ones who grew up fans are now taking the mantel and they suck.
I read some of the review snippets on metacritic. An awful lot of them accurately described it as a mess.
I kind of knew it was going to be bad when for the first ten minutes nothing happens. Pretty sure horror movies work better with the killer offing someone in a big opening. There was no sign of Myers for what felt like ages. I found it bizarre and low key. I probably should have watched the first one again beforehand.
I don't really like David Gordon Green movies. I find them sort of low key and banal.
I wouldn't say horribly but definitely not good.Bogged down by too many unnecessary characters that were just there for nostalgia's sake.Too much cheesy melodramatic dialogue with Laurie who was pretty pointless in this one.I started to cringe every time someone said evil dies tonight.I did like all the Myers scenes and the 1978 flashbacks though.
