The ending was a mistake (spoilers)

Firstly, it’s weirdly ambiguous as to whether Wick is dead. He tells Winston to ‘take me home’ - does he mean literally, or carry his dead body, or be with him as he dies? If the latter two, where did Winston disappear to?

Nevertheless, it looks like the filmmakers killed John Wick. If so, they should have devoted more of the ridiculously long runtime to his death and its wider significance. It felt rushed and messy.

But I think killing off Wick was a mistake. Why would this relentless and invulnerable man decide to keel over moments after finally winning his freedom? Plus, his wounds were not fatal (in this movie universe anyway). If you’re going to kill him, make it concrete that he’s dead.

Finally, we don’t need any more straight white male heroes killed off to make way for ludicrous female action heroes like this ‘Ballerina’ we’re hearing about. If Keanu’s finally hanging up the bullet proof suit then at least leave the character alive in the popular imagination.

My guess is Keanu wants to give up the role for now, so make it appear Wick is dead, so folk don't keep asking when/if a new movie is coming out.

However should Keanu's career suffer or maybe he runs into money issues, then he can come back and they'll say he faked his death.

This is definitely what happened. They needed to shut up the rabid fanbase endlessly clamoring for more, but leave themselves an out just in case. I personally think he's gonna stay dead. If he ever gets his BRZRKR movie off the ground and it's a hit, he's just gonna make a bunch of them instead. An immortal character in countless timeframes is gonna be a much more fun character to play. But still very much in the wheel house of both Wick and Neo.

Dude’s 60, does he really want to start a whole new action franchise..?

reply

Well Liam Neeson is in his 70's and still doing action work. Charles Bronson was also in his 70's doing action films.

Plus they can always just use stunt doubles, CGI etc.
