Does anyone else believe Stuntman Mike's character should have remained completely cold, calm and calculating throughout the movie ?
Instead he turned into a pathetic bubbling coward ... what happened ?
In addition, I thought First Story was excellent; unfortunately dialogue in Second Half and above were downfall ( though some excellent stunt / driving when Stuntman atagonising other vehicle )
Well I think they kinda messed up Stuntman Mike's character. I think they wanted to make him be a loser who presented a facade of being a badass, but Kurt Russel is already just a natural badass that you root for him regardless, so when he reveals that he's a little pussy, it just throws you for a loop.
I mean they did present him as kinda nasty and weird in the beginning with him eating those nachos in a fairly disgusting way, how the other guys were making fun of him, and him trying to work his charisma on the girls but then ruining it with that sneeze fail, but it all came off as just kinda strange/awkward.
Death Proof second half is brilliant... Its like Tarantino is saying, in the 70's and 80's slasher films, the cold calculating assassin always prevails... Well not anymore, BAM, he introduces the "normal" look, and suddenly the film loses its dreamy quality and becomes pessimistic and real 90's Tarantino style Suddenly Mike is not that cool anymore And suddenly these girl aren't that innocent, they kick ass
I loved how he changed. He lost against the girls. That's why he turned into a coward. He was no longer in control of what was happening and he didn't like it. He planned what he would do with the first set of girls, he spoke to them before. With the 2nd lot of girls, he hardly did any planning so it was bound to go wrong. It helped that 2 of them were stunt girls so knew how handle it better. It was funny when Zoe hit him with the bar, I nearly died laughing. I personally love the film and think the idea of changing Stuntman Mike in a snivelling coward was genius
Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, although I think Stuntman Mike's death could have been a little more satisfying. That was my big letdown. I definitely think the villain overshadowed the "heroes" in this movie. If he had to die, dead in a crash so epic not even a death proof car could save him would have been more worthy, IMO.
The man was a stunt man for christ sake! The scenes where he is freak'n when he is shot i don't buy...he prob. been in worst pain making movies...i don't see him acting that way on a set...but the part where he freaks from no longer having control i buy
Just saw this for the first time, and SO glad someone made a thread on this! I was totally disappointed at the end!
Was rooting for Mike all the way! Like someone said, he was just too badass and likeable not to root for. Plus Kim was a total b*tch and I wanted to see her lose
I get the whole reversal aspect, and it did definitely surprise me, so that's kinda cool. Idk, big Tarantino fan, but seeing Stuntman Mike go down like that was just kinda sad. Poor K-Russ
Stuntman Mike was a POS who deserved the humiliating death he got in the end. The boot scene in the end where the so called victims exactly their vengeance was met by wild cheers in the movie audience! A bad ending would have been for them to show this MF mercy, or call the cops etc. as some of the dorkwads on this thread have suggested. The days of weak and submissive women are OVER, thank God.
listen here, you dumb c--t. you just like stuntman mike getting his the way he did because you are exactly what his character was supposed to be. all you and a--holes like you care about are results and not actually solving problems. this was a BAD ENDING because we were meant to root for them, but instead we can't because they are boring, annoying, arrogant, and cruel. when they exact their revenge they talk more sh-- than anybody, taunt like a black stereotype, and then kill him. what they should have done is hunt him down, ram his car, (while showing great despair or an amount of joy equal to his or no emotion at all) question him about his intent and who he was, knock his car off of the road, continue the interrogation, beat him, and then call the cops. also you know nothing of feminism otherwise you would have viewed this ending with logic instead of instinct. and frankly stuntman mike was a much better character than most of the people in the second half. suck on that, you pu--y wipe.
I believe the character "Stuntman Mike" symbolizes a bully. When people run away from him he gets a kick out of it. However, when people stand up to him and rebel, he runs away because he has no ground to defend. At least that was the message i got out of his character so the ending, though abrupt, fit the story fairly well.
