What do you think was the overall message?

What do you think was the overall message of the movie?

I personally think it's that you aren't supposed to be with your "soulmate" your entire life. You are meant to be with certain people at certain points in your life. And just because someone destroys you, it doesn't mean it was a mistake, or not worth it, or that you never should have been with them. Many people find the ending depressing but I found it quite hopeful.

I thought the message of the film was summed up in one of its taglines.

"Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't".

Life is like that, but life goes on.

"I don't want any Commies in my car. No Christians, either."

That Jenny Beckman is a b!tch.

Any message this film could have possibly had was chucked out the window by a final scene that seems to suggest we should be happy that the protagonist hasn't grown at all.

Overall message: When you think you are listening carefully and in-synch with your lover, maybe you are not...

i think the overall message was that you can think you found your soulmate and be very very wrong. the typical hollywood stuff makes you think the first woman you really meet and get along with, well thats your soul-mate, but thats not the case, people will pretend to be certain ways that they actually aren't, and persistence doesn't always pay off.

I think of the film as sort of an elegant proof that idealism isn't a bad thing, a sort of big beautiful homage to believing in love and being idealistic. Sure, Tom goes through emotional hell by being so vulnerable and open, but he also has HUGE peaks, dancing in the streets and feeling hope. And then he meets someone who seems to be as idealistic as he is, who could see him in Angela's Plaza because she was looking, and maybe that's what he always needed.

Ironically, it's the cynics that will say, and have said in this thread, that the movie was all about entertainment value and means little more. But they're cynics; of course they don't get it.
