Why did you give "Selma" a rating of 1?

"Selma" is carrying an excellent overall IMDb rating of 7.7. Sixty-eight percent of people rated it 8, 9, or 10. However, a significant minority--almost 9%--of people who voted gave it a rating on 1. As I write this, that's 424 people who believe that this was a truly terrible movie. OK--we all have the right to our opinion. However, I'm curious about this.

My question to those 424 people is, "Why did you give this movie at rating of 1?" Simple question, and I'll leave it at that. Sincerely, Red-125

I did the same with 12 Years a Slave last year which stole the award anyway.. Then I viewed it and found it very entertaining.. 9/10.. #5 movie of last year for me.. It's my right as an American to give it any rating I please..

I'm sure that's precisely what the Founding Fathers were thinking of when they drafted the Constitution: the Americans' right to give a movie the worst possible rating despite not having seen it.

And before anyone tries saying I'm racist.. I have a black attorney and i've donated 5 grand to the Boys & Girls of America.. God Bless.

LOL

I've seen the movie and thought it was mostly bad, mediocre at best, but even I think you're ridiculous.

What does that phrase "My right as an American" mean? I hear it a lot but rights have to be enshrined in law, you have no more right to post a review on Amazon than you have the right to cough, but the phrase is a curious one. I'd like to see a movie about Rosa Parks, a brave woman. I don't think I would be too upset if the actress who played her had different coloured eyes though. Anyway, have a lovely day guys.

american_champion I wouldn't call you a racist but an idiot.

An appropriate rating since you haven't watched it would have been to not rate it period! Your handle, your comments and your declaration of right as an American to rate it as such is just sheer nonsense and stupidity. You and Sarah Palin are whats wrong with America today!

BTW, how are you related to the Palin family?

Sadly people with your attitude are the reason IMDB ratings simply can't be trusted on any level.

Rating a film you haven't seen - especially for reasons of spite - is just ridiculous.

That doesn't mean you aren't racist. Just as having a white lawyer and not giving to the Boys and Girls would not mean you were.

Well as long as you've donated?
Getting to the point why on earth would you score a movie you haven't seen yet? Also why would you score a movie you haven't seen yet a 1? What's up with that? Why not just wait after the oscars and then watch it? Oscar bait films in this category might annoy you but still a 1 is pretty harsh. It was directed by a black person with black actors leading. Hollywood isn't doing anything here, it's really black people doing something for themselves.
I haven't seen the full cast but I do like the actor Common, he's great on Hell on Wheels. I think the point is that black oppression still exists today, and the old events aren't even taken that seriously from people of other ethnicities. We don't have many good films on the times, I'd like to see more of them if they are done properly. We can't forget they did not exist, and if you ask me I think it's something a lot of white people would rather forget they did. I'd also like to see more black cowboys, maybe steve mcqueen can make one. That would be nice.

The black community needs better directors to represent them. I can't stand tyler perry. I think his films make people have the wrong assumptions about black people. He also turns them into cardboard characters. I'm not black but I still feel the need to say this all.

What I would like to know is whether all 424 people that gave it that rating actually saw the film. The film is only now coming into wide release. Everyone has a right to their opinion yes, but no one has a right to an opinion for a film that they have not seen.

Dear NYrunner, Thanks for writing. It never even occurred to me that people would vote for a movie they hadn't seen. The good news is that despite the people who sent some of the "unusual" responses to my thread, the movie is still carrying a very high rating. Red-125

More signs of racism on IMDB. The number of 1/10 votes for the following films;

The Godfather 30667 (stupid wops)
Schindlers List 13639 (bloody Kikes)
Seven Samurai 7495 (cunning Nips)
Braveheart 6998 (unruly caber tossers)
Return of the King 24207 (mad middle earthers)

All these films also have excellent ratings, and personally I ranked them higher than Selma, which I would give a solid 7/10. A good film.

Dear mrduvall, Thank you for putting ratings into perspective. Red-125

This is misleading. Those films have more 1s because they have more votes. Proportionally, all of them have a lower percentage than Selma.

The Godfather: 3.2%
Schindler's List: 2%
Seven Samurai: 3.9%
Braveheart: 1.2%
Return of the King: 2.5%

A certain percentage of 1s is to be expected. Every popular film has its trolls and irrational haters. The fact that Selma has such a high number indicates something else. For the record, I too gave Selma a 7 which is less than I gave Return of the King or The Godfather, but the same as Braveheart.
