Watched it in cinema last Tuesday. Not very good.

In Erich Maria Remarque's birthplace, no less! Anyway the movie is too long and isn't very captivating, nor does it make you root for anyone. The cinematography is pretty good and the scenery is nicely done but there is never a real sense of dread.
And the tank driving over a guy was just thrown in to compete with the Fury movie.

It was a fun night out but the movie itself was not worth the price of admission.
Best watch the 1930 edition, it's great.

There's simply no way that tank could have rolled on the guy inside a trench. The whole point of WWI tanks was to roll over and past trenches.

reply

If you watch it again there was a split in the trench where soldiers enter and exit with supplies and whatnot. That's the part the tank rolled into.

Go watch a Marvel movie maybe?

reply

The OP did say the original would be a good alternative.

How so? What saved the night out?

reply

The food and the company

reply

I agree. I gave it a 5/10

The soundtrack was awful imo.

reply

I really did think it was a very good soundtrack indeed. Very refreshing.

I have never seen the 1930 movie and I have not read the book but I found this (admittedly very long movie) quite captivating.

***SPOILERS to follow**

The scene in the flooded bomb crater where Pvt. Baumer stabs the Frenchman to death but he doesn’t die quickly enough and then Baumer feels pity and remorse was quite moving. These were young men with families thrown into a mud hole to claw their way out of, what a tragic scene!

Excellent movie imo.

reply

The book is excellent. This movie, not so much.
