Superhero saturation: Why have Ant-Man and Shazam struggled at the box office?

There are many complimentary reasons I'm sure.

But fundamentally, as was the case (I think) with the Han Solo film: There just isn't any real interest in these particular characters.

I think the subject of the film has to have a following and then the film itself has to be good.

Put out a good Batman or Spiderman film and they will come.

Ant-Man? Shazam? A young Han Solo?

I don't think anyone cares.

See John Carter for further evidence.

reply

a Han Solo film starring Ford would've been a big deal. an unknown young guy who doesn't look like him? Nah

Shazam should never have got a sequel, same could be argued for AntMan just one and done, then they just show up in the team up films

reply

Worked for blade runner 2049. I think it made a profit. I didnt really like it tho

reply

No, Blade Runner 2049 was a flop.

Glad to hear

Just for a moment put aside the Franchise-Trilogy business model and focus on the Marvel/Disney foundation in long-form storytelling and character arcs. Marvel has all of these IP's that populate their MCU. Many are going to get multiple films and will also appear in cross-overs and team-ups. This was the staple and bread and butter method in print form. Ant-man was going to get multiple films just by the nature of his importance to the Avengers. (In print Hank/Ant-Man along with Janet/Wasp were much more prominent). In the MCU Stark is given the Lionshare of credit for Ultron, Vision and as well as a foil to Thanos.

Warner/DC playing catch-up to Disney/Marvel, attempted to fast-track ANY success and you get Shazam to Shazam 2 and then a Black Adam without any coherence to building a connected universe and thus, failure in the form of mediocrity. Few cared because it felt disposal and non-impacting.

Every Marvel film isn't meant to be an "Event" film but so many became that. Ant-Man 1 and 2 were solid box office successes but they were never mean to be Rock-Star event movies. That doesn't cause those two entries to be failures because they didn't reach the Billion-Dollar club.

Both are underperforming but there's slight differences. Antman 3 has brand recognition since the last two were well received. So it might at least break even which is just not gonna happen for Shazam 2.

The first Shazam got critical acclaim and it certainly made $$$, but it wasn't a big hit. This one had the misfortune of being delayed cuz of COVID and its younger cast aging out. And let's be honest, the trailers kind of stunk. Rock or not.

This might spell bad news for upcoming DC movies like The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2. Not sure what the hell interest there is for Kraven the Hunter. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is the likeliest bet for a big hit. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse might be alright. But then again, time is of the essence these days and it has been 5 years since the first movie.

reply

Flash will be huge as being sold as Batman89 legacy sequel (plus a NWH style multiverse movie for DC) so an easy 1b, Guardians is Guardians and the final one so could get up to 1b this time, BlueBertte wtf is that?! no ones ever heard of that guy, wont do s*it!. Aquaman 2 has got bad early word but the 1st film is the biggest grossing DC movie of all time (1.1b even bigger than TDKs) plus its kind of the final DCEU film, so got to do at least 700-800m even if it bad. the new Spiderverse animated films might do huge 1b or just do similar to 1st.

reply

I like how you didn't even bother hypothesizing about Kraven the Hunter's chances.

reply

Kraven either Morbius or Venom 2 box office. probably Morbius 😄

"the new Spiderverse animated films might do huge 1b or just do similar to 1st."

Even if the sequel doubled the take of the critically acclaimed, well received, Oscar boosted, 1st film, it would be well short of a 1 billion. Why might a sequel make almost triple? Even the highest grossing Pixar movie (Incredibles 2) is only 1.2bil, and only 3 others (Toy Story sequels and Finding Dory) have reached 1bil.

reply

Bc the first was so well received and its coming after the huge 1.9b Spiderman NWH (which was abit influenced by Into the Spiderverse)

reply

Spider-man or not, I think the style of animation is the limiting factor for the broadest appeal, and that level of jump, 375m to 1bil, would be crazy for any 2nd film of any kind.

reply

It would crazy but it has been done before Batman Begins-TDK. btw I dont think Spiderverse 2 will do 1b but it could

Blue Beetle might be a huge hispanic hero film that captures the hispanic market. Parts of it will be in Spanish and some big hispanic stars will be in it. It'll be interesting to see if DC can snag the Spanish-speaking market since many of the foreigners that I have met in the US still watch shows from their country of origin.

Shazam is a D level character and most people dont care or know anything about him.

They just aren’t good movies, I guarantee Guardians 3 will do great because it will be a good movie

reply

Superhero movie fatigue is real. It was bound to happen at some point, not sure why some are denying the blatant.

reply

Agreed. I'm a big fan of the genre, but I'd prefer 2 good movies a year vs. 10 mediocre films.

reply

I love 'em too, but ditto.

Shazam is a second-tier hero and he is supposed to be a more of a kid's hero. The two youngest family members were around fifteen or sixteen when the sequel was filmed. This could have been a big kids' movie but they made one of the kids openly gay. Many parents do not want their children exposed to sexuality or homosexuality so they alienated a lot of conservative parents by having the young man come out as gay. It looks like they hinted at it in the first movie but I totally missed it.

The Shazam sequel also lacks a good villain. Why are three females running around playing badasses? Shouldn't there be a proper villain like Black Adam or another big-name DC villain like Joker or Mr. Freeze? I'm glad they didn't use Captain Nazi since there have been too many shows/movies with Nazis as the villains.

I think Ant-Man didn't take off since Ant-Man is not the featured hero. The rest of the family stole the show. It also sounded like the villains weren't really villains. Woke Marvel has been playing a game with their villains lately. Instead of saying that a villain is inherently evil, Marvel is trying to show that everyone is good and that villains are forced into their lives of crime due to circumstances beyond their control. This approach to villains is some sort of restorative justice philosophy that advocates a healing approach to fighting crime instead of a punitive approach.
