No, modern women have a successful career, make tons of money and still have time for a family. Oh, wait, that didn't work out for Miri, right?
Social/financial security was always a concern for women and it still is. Even if they can provide it themselves, they still prefer men that are at least equally successful. The same guy is more attractive to them in a Porsche than on a bicycle. And if there are two guys and the poor one is better looking, she'd still marry the rich one but have an affair with the other ;)
In the case of a poor woman, which is good-looking and would in real life constantly being asked out by guys, she would long have married a guy with a stable income. Unless she has some issues like being really dumb, annoying, or in some other way not acceptable for such a man.

There are enough statistics and tests to prove that. Last thing I've seen was a report where they put a guy in Jeans and T-Shirt and later in a suit with gold watch. Females rated him a 3.9 in plain clothes and 8.2 in suit. And that's nothing new, similar tests have been made time and time again, with statistical relevant group sizes and variations. So, yeah, a lot may not be this "shallow", but the majority is.
And why is it "shallow"? Females are hardwired to get a secure environment for a family, they think of possible kids. I wouldn't call that "shallow", it's just logical and evolutionary necessary.
Although there may be a lot that also consider personal advantage by living in a nice house, having enough to eat and go on vacation once a year to see something of the world, not having to worry that much about basic things. What I find strangest about this thread is that the only option the OP thought of for her was to find a rich man...is that was this person resorts to, to avoid poverty? Sounds more like prostitution to me.
I'm sure she could of lived at home and continued her education or applied for other jobs between work.
