Now that the dust has cleared, think way back and tell me why...

you started to watch BE in the first place?

What was the draw?

Winter? Van Patten? The Scorsese tease?

Gangster show?

Some history that hasn't already been beaten to death in film/tv?

Buscemi fan? Pitt? MacDonald? Other cast members?

You'll watch anything that HBO rolls out at 9pm on Sundays?

What was it?

Hey, at least there'll be nothing to fight about in this thread

I go to Atlantic City a lot and I love it there, when I heard Boardwalk Empire was taking place there I had to watch to see the 1920s version of a place that I love going to. Than the acting and story lines for some characters kept me watching.

Jimmy Darmody.

When I first heard of Boardwalk, it was collaboration between Mark Wahlberg and Martin Scorsese. That's how it was presented, then I heard it was going to be about gangsters during prohibition in Atlantic City, and then Buscemi was cast as Nucky. And I was always a fan of Buscemi. So it sounded like a must watch. I was never disappointed with the series at all. The casting was great, the stories in between, the way it was shot, I absolutely loved the show. HBO has become the only network that I give any show a shot. I even watched that show Togetherness for an episode I couldn't get through it. But Boardwalk was a no brainier for me, I was definitely going to watch that.

The writer Terence Winter is phenomenal. He was at the helm so it never swerved off in different directions like Homeland. But the first season with all its brillance - sets, costumes, characters, story- was still slow to get into and what made it really ignite was Michael Pitt's Jimmy. The female characters varied and were wonderful. I loved Jimmy's realtionship with his wife, Angela. And of course, Margaret's story was fantastic, but the story of Gillian was one of the best. I also thought Chalky White was amazing. Same for Eli - actually this series had a wealth of characters. But as much as I like Buscemi, I thought he was miscast, a creative choice however and he still carried the stories because they were so well written. But it was Jimmy Darmody who was really it and it was tragic to end his character all because of disagreements with those in charge of the show. His character could have and should have gone on for a number of seasons actually until the final - and it would have been a better finale. I did not like the final season that much, but I love the episodes with Capone, Eli and Nelson. I think Gillian's story was the most tragic and really came full circle.

Never heard of it until it won some awards which prompted me to look it up and saw the cast so gave it a shot and loved it.

For me, it was a combination of things: first & foremost Scorsese was the executive producer and also directing the pilot (I see all Scorsese films). Secondly, the prohibition-era setting. Third, I was interested in seeing Steve Buscemi play way against type.

I absolutely hate that particular time period. I'm not sure why, maybe as a kid I went to Knott's Berry Farm too much and they had that Roaring 20's area and my Dad would make me go through it every single time. Soap box racers and the 20's themed part of the park just pissed me off for some reason. I also hate The Great Gatsby. yeah yeah whatever, you can't make me like it, don't bother.

It took me a few episodes to get into it, probably more like 10 before I realized how great it was. I love it now, I'm only 1/2 way into S. 2 and I can tell what will happen unfortunately.

For me, it's totally about the characters. I enjoy the occasional twist but they aren't....I don't know. Blindsiding? They are just right. I'm more interested in the characters and how they interact and are motivated.

This is the reason I absolutely LOVE True Detective. Season one was almost one of the most perfect mini-series type shows I've ever seen. The end...maybe not so much. Season 2 has promise but we'll see.

Anything else like this I might like? I really enjoyed The Newsroom but jesus christ what the hell did they do to it. Just like "*beep* THIS" end the show quickly haha.

I've never seen The Sopranos... maybe that's next?

For me, it was the era. I adore the 20s fashion for both men and women, especially. Dieselpunk is my style of choice.

But the draw for me was solely for Stephen Graham. I dinnae ken why I've a huge crush on him. Hahaha

reply

The time frame of the show and how Steve buchemi would do as a bad guy.

reply

Michael Pitt. I'll watch him in anything. And he far exceeded all of my expectations.

Besides, if you've seen one gangster movie/tv show, you've seen them all.
