Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

You know nothing about Dicky Ecklund huh?

This is one of my favourite Christian Bale films in the past couple of years, I've not enjoyed him this much in a film since "The machinist" he is why I enjoyed the film so much.

reply

you may not have liked his performance, but it wasn't bad acting. i have had a love hate thing for christian bale - and i really did not like the character he played at all. but his performance was overwhelmingly real and spot on if you have ever known a manic crackhead.

WTF....are u high...

Watch the movie again...he has the exact same body language as the real Dicky...

reply

You're missing the point: he was playing a character with a "hey look at me!" attitude. Dicky was always doing over the top stuff to have the spotlight on him. He was a loud guy.

How would you have Bale play it? Act mellow and let Mark's character have the spotlight? That's the opposite of how the story went.

also you gota remember for most of the film he WAS being recorded and speaking to a camera... those people recording the documentary

reply

yeah because every person in this world has a 'subtle' personality that requires a 'subtle' performance. you have absolutely no clue about acting.

Wonder if the OP and other detractors considered this:

The clip at the very end with the real Dickie and Wahlberg on the couch ...
WHY did they tack that clip onto the end ? Ever think that the director and others on the set were equally awed by Bales performance and so added that part, with Wahlberg, not the real Micky, to demonstrate to the audience just how damn well Bale nailed the part ??
It was obviously an attempt to 'fool' the audience - and it worked on me, I admit it - not until I started reading about the movie here did I realize that was the real Dicky and not Bale.
If they had wanted to simply introduce the real life protagonist(s), they would have shown BOTH brothers. If the film makers and 'star' of the movie (Wahlberg) agreed to participate in this little 'prank', doncha think it was because people who really know the art of film making better than you, felt that Bale nailed it to the point of being 'uncanny' ?? Otherwise, what was the point ?
I think anyone who was amazed by the performance is in good company, has an 'eye' for great acting not unlike the pros. You critics are obviously clueless. I respect others opinions but in this case, the pros, in effect, told you that you don't know what your talking about.
When you posted your criticism, were you aware that Bales co-stars, the director etc., had already given their opinion of his performance before you had even watched the movie ? Yet you come here and say they were wrong/don't know what they're talking about ??
Ballsy.
