Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

I think they understand your argument just fine, it's just that they, and the majority of movie lovers and film critics completely disagree with your opinion.

reply

Really? I watched an interview with Dickie Eklund and Bale was almost a mirror image to him in terms of mannerisms and his rather loud personality; he perfectly acted the character and was fully deserving of the Oscar. To me, he seamlessly embodied the character fully, and I still marvel at how he pulled off what is a very difficult character to play.

"I'll give you the moon, Mary. "

"Vulpix" you wouldnt know fine acting if it walked up to you and knocked you on your ass.

Bale is a phenomenal actor, and this was an incredible film.

reply

Is this critique serious? His acting was over-the-top and "look at me"? DICKIE is over-the-top and "look at me". Your problem is with the character, but somehow because you know that Christian Bale ISN'T Dickie, your response is "this is so obviously fake". Ridiculous.

reply

Yeah, it's serious.

We're just one post away from 200 replies. Let's make it happen, people!

I have had some experiences with drug addicts and I think he was very much like a drug addict.
Christian Bale wasn't loud.

That wasn't the point I was trying to make at all, as stated in the original post, but... hey, you're reply number 200! You win... an emoticon!

I find this topic funny considering Bale lots of times plays a subtle character. He took a backseat and stayed in the shadows as Batman because that is what he was meant to do for that role. Yet this is only the second time he has played a very outgoing character, first being Patrick Bateman, and you rag on him for being too over the top.

I never got the sense that the OP did about Bale's performance. I thought it was excellent- very believable. I have seen people just like this guy, and I thought Bale nailed it.

reply

It will be interesting to see Bale in a soft-spoken, more nuanced performance. The OP has a point. But, his intensity (often comparable to Pacino) is becoming a one note act. Looking forward to his performances outside the superhero-blockbuster genre. So many "biopics" are coming out "The Kings Speech", "J.Edgar" and others force actors to "mimic" more so than create the character and evolve the character.

This was a tear jerker, and in many ways, is an old-school , melodrama...i hope that boxing can return to this, as it is a sideshow now. It has fallen off the national radar, allowing the video-game-violence of "cage match" UFC garbage that is awful for the sport and for sports, in general.

reply

Have you not seen any other Bale movies other than Batman and The Fighter? Wow. Well, if you ever watch his other films, you're in for a real treat :) If you're looking for soft-spoken performances, I would check out 3:10 To Yuma, The New World, All The Little Animals, even Little Women, etc.

Christian has to be one of the most dedicated actors working in the industry.
