Bale is a distractingly bad actor

This has always bothered me: It takes an actor without any sense of subtlety whatsoever for people to sit back and say, "What a great actor." Throughout The Fighter, it felt as though Bale was winking to the camera, saying, "Look at me, everybody! I'm acting! Now where's my Oscar?" I was constantly taken out of the film because of Bale's distractingly self-conscious performance.

Good actors work with such subtlety that their performances go unnoticed, and, unfortunately, are often not recognized. Bale's performance in The Fighter is just the opposite: Loud, self-conscious, and totally distracting.

EDIT: This thread won't die, largely because the majority of people replying are misunderstanding my argument. For that reason, I'll reiterate the clarification I made earlier:

It's possible to play a loud character and do it right. For example, the character of Taketoki Washizu in Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood is one that requires a broad performance. Toshirô Mifune delivers just that in a way that keeps me engaged in the film from beginning to end.

By contrast to Mifune's performance, Christian Bale broadcasts the fact that he's acting in a way that takes me out of the movie. My problem isn't with the loud character--my problem is the way Bale performs the character in a manner that makes him seem like he is acting, thereby taking me out of the film, rather than seamlessly embodying the character as a good actor should.

You're probably unaware of Micky's brother and trainer, then. Otherwise you'd be saying Bale played the role perfectly. Because that's what Dicky was like. Loud, selfish, annoying, and always yearning for attention.

reply

Amazing performance from Bale.
Don't get me wrong, he's not always great in everything he does (Terminator Salvation he seemed a little "off"), but Bale is this generations Brando in my opinion.

Bravo Christian, more of the same please.

reply

Still completely agree with you!

reply

Thanks for that.

it seems a little odd to claim that he played the loud obnoxious character wrong, if you don't know the person he is claiming to be.

i only know of the brother from the closing credits scene, and he did seem hyper, self-aware, and mentally off.

reply

Yes, the brother did seem hyper, self-aware, and mentally off; but he also came across as genuine. Bale did not. That is the fundamental difference.

I didnt bother to read the entire thread that runs for pages..but to the OP,I can say one thing..anybody who says Mifune is subtle in any of his performances, but not Bale here, must be living in a different world..Mifune and subtlety..thats like a paradox,man..

*bangs head against wall*

You missed my point entirely. I've already edited my original post for clarity. There's really nowhere to go from here.

I must be some kind of a masochist for continuing to reply to these comments.

I can understand the OP's point in the original post, other critics mentioned similar problems they had with Bale's performance (even those who liked the film, such as Michael Phillips). Regardless, the performance still worked overall for me.

Your such a troll, you know that the character he was playing is a loud and obnoxious crackhead. Do you have any backstory about the Ward's in Lowell, MA before you spouted this uninformed bull? I think you have no idea what makes a great actor and the fact that you are using Akira's movies as a refernce point makes you a phony. I bet you just found out about Akira's movies in the last year or so and you suddenly think you have a superior view of film. Also who are you and what sort of credentials do you even have to pass off your opinions like they are facts and instantly dismissing others views before people have a chance to convey them. Go back into your anti-social gole that you live in and please spare us further ignorant crap.

Seriously?! I thought he was a brilliant crack-addict. Cocky, confident, over-the-top, and smug. I'm not a Bale fan, but this performance rocked in my opinion, perhaps you should mold your opinions to the context of a film, like most movie "critics" should, as opposed to genre or tradition.

What the hell is an Aluminum Falcon?

What are you talking about? I think he was GREAT. A very believable dickhead :P
