Just watched it

I heard how great this movie was and I was liking the 1st 45 minutes then it became a bore fest , criminally overrated a 5 at best

It was a painfully mediocre film that got hyped to the extreme for two reasons

1. It had a female director.

2. James Cameron.

Titanic swept the boards at the oscars & they didn't want do to the same with Avatar, so they manufactured a random movie for extreme adulation so Cameron wouldn't win everything again. The makers of the movie even sent an anti-avatar memo during awards season (telling them to vote for hurt locker) in which the academy duly obliged: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0887912/trivia/?item=tr1124101&ref_=ext_shr_lnk

The movie grossed only 12 million on its initial release which is the lowest ever grossing best picture winner in history. Literally no one saw this movie when it came out. No one gave a flying fuck about it. It was a bang average, Paul Greengrass wannabe war film, until it got turned into a PC, anti-avatar vehicle.

Look at the director stumbling over her words in the acceptance speech:https://youtu.be/RziREMIxmN8?feature=shared&t=172. That's not because she's a moron, it's because she's shell shocked at how a crappy movie suddenly became hailed by everybody as an oscar winning masterpiece.

It then got even more hype because a woman had never won best director before. This was the 2010s thus the start of handing people awards for political reasons and not for talent. They even admitted it prior to the nominees being read out: https://youtu.be/e-DPBOTlSWk?feature=shared&t=25

This film's hype and success was all fake, and just makes me think of all the great films that have come out over the years that deserved this film's praise but never got it.

Well said ,I was shocked at how bad the movie actually was considering it has a 7.3 on IMDb which is what I base my movies on

Thanks, appreciate it.

If you've not seen it, I recommend Green Zone, which is like Hurt Locker in style and setting, but with an actual story.

I stopped watching prior to that. The primary protagonist screws up on the job so bad, that a soldier junior to him (Sergeant) was able to assault him (Sergeant 1st Class) in front of others with no consequences. I was not interested in watching a f*ck-up screwing around with IED's.

I am a US Army veteran and this movie gets so many things wrong. It's just not believable.

Yep, it was dull apart from a couple of brief action and suspense sequences, much like Zero Dark Thirty.

Shame because Bigelow’s early output was fucking awesome, namely Point Break and Strange Days. I wish she’d go back to making classics like those.

And Near Dark.

reply

Yep, good shout.

It seems once Cameron pulled out she was but a husk 🤷🏻‍♂️

reply

Zero Dark Thirty is much better than The Hurt Locker.

reply

It was dull up until the last 15 minutes which ironically was shot in a hurry once Bin Laden had been killed.
