yeah I was thinking of checking this one out on Friday night and wanted constructive opinions on this one...Is it good? I know it's gotten mixed to negative reviews but I usually like this kind of movie...anyways what did you guys think of it?
Ended up seeing it...it wasn't that bad of course it took itself too seriously but in the end I somehow found myself enjoying this film...However it won't please everyone so I recommend to wait for DVD (personal recommendation)
Wait until it's on Netflix. It is not worth the money. It seemed more like a Sci-Fi special, and having never read the manga, I could almost guarantee they butchered it. It had a great premise, great action, but the acting was just terrible. The only person who could act was the scared teenager playing Lucie.
This is one of the worst movies of 2011 I've seen so far. Hollywood takes certain scenes from the movie, hypes it up, and got you pumped up to see it for the first time and its utter *beep* Now you sitting in the movie theatre debating how are to get ur money back from this hype up movie. Just my opinion, I think when they put trailers out to get u all excited to see the movie to which they know it's still *beep*
I wouldnt say its a bad movie but it isnt a good one either. Like other says, they dont explain much, they just show you badass priest killing very fast their enemies.. There is nothing memorable in this movie, just plain action with sketchy move from Paul Betanny and Maggie Q. It's like if they made this movie just to tease us so we have to go see the sequel. It is a short and badly made movie but it still can be a one time night entertainment. At least the vampires wasnt sparkling -_- 5/10.
My sense is that there are a good number of Catholics who won't like this movie. There are many more or less obvious Catholic trappings in this movie and an arrogant, out of touch "hierarchy" is not portrayed "well" (to say the least) in the film.
On the other hand, if one takes the movie's message (and yes, I do believe that the movie _has a message_) as being "If the Church becomes complacent and ceases to take its role of combating Evil in the world seriously, then what good is it?" then I found the movie actually very cool ;-).
The movie reminded me of Bladerunner, the Matrix and yes, The Book of Eli with Episode IV Star Wars thrown in.
The original story comes from South Korea, which has a _young_ Catholic church (both in terms of formal Catholic presence and in terms of its members). I found it fascinating that the Catholic Church has entered _so deeply_ into the pop-cultural consciousness that a story like this could have been put together.
And dare one dream that American young people would ever come to think of priests as being _this cool_ again ;-)
I liked the movie for what it was. It could have been longer, and had more action, but I enjoyed myself anyway. I really liked Karl Urban in it, and Cam Gigandet was pretty cool as a Malcolm Reynolds type gunman. I liked the blending of western, vampire, and sci-fi genres.
I guess I'm in the minority of really liking the film. Yes, I agree that it could have been longer and had more action, but I still highly enjoyed watching it. I've always loved Paul Bettany and Karl Urban and they did great in their roles. Cam's character Hicks was also cool and I liked Maggie's character too. I do think though that this is just setting up for the sequal. And I don't understand why people are saying they didn't give us any backstory? They gave us backstory about how the priest became priest and what happened to Paul's character and everything. I wasn't left disappointed cause I didn't know the story... Guess that is just me. I'll actually buy it on DVD, but again I guess I'm one of the few. :)

I really liked it as well and I'm glad I saw it before I read the reviews.
Maybe it helps that my usual movies are art-housey, foreign types of flicks so I don't get the comparisons to Bladerunner, Resident Evil and the like since I've never seen them. And I've never seen Twilight or its copycats so I haven't had my fill of vampires yet.
The story is not too deep, I figured out the two main plot twists early in the movie, but it was still entertaining. The only thing I didn't understand is why the city was in darkness but the sun shone in the wastelands. And if the vampires had been defeated, why was life so miserable?
I have always liked Paul Bettany which is the main reason I saw it. He makes for a very compelling character no matter what he's in. He does the tortured religious figure a little too well. There was Legion but does anyone remember The Reckoning? I can understand why some might think he's being typecast. Still, I enjoyed Paul and the movie enough that's I'd watch the sequel.
this is also a film i'd buy on Blu-Ray. i've also never read the graphic novel & i honestly didn't even know it WAS ONE! until i took a look at the poster. if you saw "The Cinema Snob' review it well "Brad Jones" anyways i just mentioned his name cause it's on his website. he reviewed it as himself is what i mean.
anyways, though he didn't like it. he saw in 3D & i didn't so maybe that will help if you don't see it in 3D? since from what i hear there isn't much to see anyways. & it's just cheaper than seeing it in 3-D than the standard version.
anyways i dunno why the city was in total blackness that made no sense to me either. i felt we had plenty back story. oh i'm sure we would have used more of it. but than the character of "The Priest" isn't one to really open up either way. i didn't see the twist coming, but than again to be fair i wasn't looking for one either. sometimes i just sit back & watch the movie or tv show without trying to figure out the twist. sometimes i'm able to figure it out. sometimes not.
i've also seen "Thor" a couple weeks ago & i didn't think it was that great to be honest. it wasn't a terrible film by any means. but it was a decent film. it's a film i prolly won't buy when that gets released on Blu-Ray in a few months. but than i went to go & see it with friends, to mainly get out of the house. i don't get out much you see. & i went in seeing this one with out really seeing much of a trailer to be fair. when they do play it i wasn't really paying much attention to it to be fair. so i had no idea it was even a horror film. though it won't surprise me if they DO release an alternate version that is more bloodier than the released version.
well that's my take on it anyways he he. sorry about the length.
I can appreciate the effort put into the CGI and FX but the rest of the film is as poorly made as Legion. Why the money men would put such faith in Paul Bettany to sell tickets is beyond me.
Feels more like the pilot of a TV series, but enjoyable nevertheless. Some good acting, great CGI sets, some crafty digs at organised religion - all in all a harmless bit of fun.
You won´t care if anyone lives or dies.Bettany repeats his stoic badass character from Legion,Karl Urban is so awful that I couldn´t watch most of the time.Young Cam Gigandet isn´t all bad, probably the next Paul Walker.Maggie Q is so beautiful. The intro is extremely cool,it has some wicked and impressive special effects, vampires look pretty creepy.
It´s short and that was a good choice by the director. It never drags, somethings always happening but it´s nothing mindblowing either...so.It´s both neither a good or a bad movie. 5.7 sounds about right.I saw it at home, watch it in theaters ´n enjoy the effects to its fullest.
