Hear me out

I know your first reaction will be "Avatar is not a great movie, but surely it's at least ok. Not 'bad' in the same league as Transformers movies." Actually, it's worse

It proposes itself as both the ultimate blockbuster AND an Oscar bait movie. It started two separate but equally horrible trends. One was the 3-D movie. 3-D is a shit format and shouldn't exist at all, much less for as many movies as it does. Pretty much any medium budget-sized blockbuster and up. Second is the use of CGI to tell an entire movie; the movie is mainly just CGI characters and set pieces. Movies like John Carter, Tron: Legacy, Valerian and the City of the Thousand Planets, the MCU, the new Star Wars movies, any "connected universe", including the Mummy one, the Godzilla ones, and any other shit coming out these next few years

this movie showed that sticking to an extremely safe, formulaic, plot can rake in billions if you slap on a cool coat of CGI paint. people are stupid and will pay for anything

I kinda agree... Although, if i were forced to, I would rather sit through another Transformers movie than another Avatar...

I don't know about worst, but I kind of hate it, if that's any consolation. The brief moments of Fern Gully prettiness is not even worth it imo.

I totally agree, Bob. In addition I hated its extreme Leftist message that man is an evil creature and is going to approach alien life in a stupid manner, and try to destroy it. It's Libtard garbage.

Yeah, our real history is nothing at all like that. More technologically advanced societies have always done well by the indigenous cultures they met. Ask any Native American. They'll have nothing but kind words and cheerful stories about the way their ancestors were treated. And greedy corporations ruining a planet's environment for the sake of profit - where do they come up with this crazy stuff?

I agree on your point, somewhat. But I do not agree that it is an "extreme" message of any political philosophy. In fact, that is a big reason why the movie is so vile

The message that it supposedly wants us to receive is such a safe, trite, overdone one

Almost 20 fucking years before Avatar was released, Dances With Wolves (another overrated movie) swept the fucking Oscars with pretty much the same message, and it was corny even back then

"Nature and nativism are good. Corporate greed, imperialism, and environmental destruction are bad"

Even many modern right-wingers would agree with this message. This has been a basic liberal philosophy for--what--centuries?

There is nothing even remotely controversial about it. It is a movie that pretends to stand for something, when really it just stands for cynical, profit-driven filmmaking

I don't care that James Cameron made Terminator and Aliens, he is still a clown with no artistic soul. Titanic was pretty much as hollow and patronizing as Avatar, it was just elevated by having lots of good actors. Avatar had bad actors and bad everything else (except technology, which is all that Cameron really cares about)

So yeah. I don't think this movie really had any sort of significant message. It lazily paid lip service to some very centrist ideals so that it could receive attention from Oscar, but it was all just for show

What's with the hyperbole? I mean, you can dislike it immensely, but to call it the worst movie of all time...its getting tedious just hearing how tedious that gets.
At the time it came out, it was probably the purtiest movie that'd been made up to that point. Seeing it in theaters, I remember just being in awe...to say it was visually stunning would be an understatement, it was amazing. Like a Jurassic park for the 2000's, as far as the CGI quality.

That being said, yeah it was immediately obvious that it was an updated Dances with Wolves...there was no getting around the almost cookie-cut plot, but it didn't matter so much with a movie that took you away like this one did...like the cliche plot was the price you had to pay to experience this level of world building.

It was a good movie for its time, and its easy to look back and find it somewhat cliche or even cringe-worthy, but...lol I don't even know why I"m bother to answer this, of course it isn't anywhere near being the worst movie of all time. Come on.
Is that ever going to get old? Once this newer generation of "Worst movie of all time"ers grows up, are there going to be more to take their place? Are we going to constantly have to wade through "worst movie of all time?" threads as long as there's an internet and people around to populate it with comments?

The more popular a movie gets, is it that much more likely to have someone being edgy with their, "Worst movie ever?" thread?

No, this is nothing new, the fact that this plot is nothing new is also nothing new...it is what it is, it was what it was, and people liked it very much in spite of its flaws. Too much, in some cases.

I almost walked out. The political message was so over the top obvious and so completely unrealistic. Of course it was aimed at the left, they eat that garbage up.

Yes we’ll wipe out an entire species without a concert at all just for magic spice mineral. Only 1 military person had any reservations. The plot has to be one of the stupidest in history.

Yep, Avatar was pretty much Dances With Space Wolves. But very few stories are truly original. It's all about the execution and they carried off the somewhat cliche story pretty well imo. And seeing it for the first time with 3D glasses in the theater, tell me the alien planet was not very cool.

I'm not sure what they were thinking though, greenlighting four sequels. If the first one flops it's going to be the most expensive direct-to-video disaster in cinematic history. Or as Netflix will end up calling it, half a billion dollars worth of content we picked up real cheap!
