I was really looking forward to this Grindhouse film; both shown together with the fake trailers in between. We were told in this country (UK) that it'd be something not seen before over here, interviews and magazine articles talking about the double feature. I couldn't wait to go and see it.
And then what happens?!?
It gets released in USA first and people start walking out after the first film, UNAWARE there was a second film! What did you guys expect? Did anyone look at the posters?
So it gets marketed as two seperate films, just so it doesn't happen again.
Thanks to you idiots, we guys over here got two seperate films instead of the one Grindhouse we'd all been waiting over a year for.
So thank you America. For ruining a unique cinema experience for everyone else, just because you're too stupid to read the posters!
Yeah, like it's pretty obvious that after the credits start to roll we'd have another film. Not everyone comes to the internet to read things about movies. Besides, consider yourself lucky. You have the chance to see the not-so-bad Planet Terror without the awful Death Proof.
Really? Why don't I see a top five film from England in profits? Where is the English Citizen Kane? I'm not saying England hasn't made great films, but come on, you're complaining about the US films when you guys have aped our industry for decades.
Sorry to call you a moron. It was uncalled for.
"LSD, golly gee, DDT, wowee! Daddy's broke Holy smoke My future's bleak Ain't it neat?"
sorry to disagree but englands got some good talent. and every country doesnt have its version of citizen kane!!!!
besides the english seem to have a bit more brains than the americans this is a generelization only, dont try to invalidate this point by saying so and so person i know is a smarter than the english!!!
americans are really really dumb for walking out of the theaters! i mean the trailer explains very CLEARLY what grindhouse was!
if they dont get the double bill thing then they should be shot el wray style!
(i believe the word double bill was invented by the americans?)

I can't actually believe you wrote that. Take MIT for example. Its in *Cambridge* Massachusetts named after Cambridge University in Cambridge (about 50 miles north of London) which dates from about the 12th century.
You have some good Universities, MIT, Caltech, Stamford but no more than we do. What you have to remember is that the US has a population which is about 6 times ours. So you'd expect 6 times as many prestigious universities. Are there?
I work a lot in Silicon Valley and there are some very clever Americans. But there are some extremely dumb ones too and FYI the average IQ in the US is a few points lower than that in the UK.
Mind telling me what MIT being in an area named after Cambridge has to do with the actual education offered at MIT as opposed to Cambridge? You do know there are a lot of areas in the states named after European areas right? And what is Stamford? Never heard of it. And why wouldn't you mention Harvard which is consistently ranked the most prestigious University in the world? And where is your source for the IQ points? Seems like you just pulled that out of your ass.

While arguing about IQs, you should know... it's "Stanford" goofball.
"Walking out early" wasn't necessarily the problem...even if people left after the first movie, they'd already paid their admission and box office would be unaffected by this. Fewer showings, due to the running time, certainly didn't help...I think the movies were released separately overseas because they could sell two films to the international market instead of one, and make more money based on the strength of the names (theoretically), to recoup what they didn't make here. It must have been frustrating though, to not be able to see it the way it was intended, I'll give you that. But at least most markets didn't have to put up with what the U.S. has had to with "Kill Bill Vol. 1" (the finale was in black and white, because it is supposedly "less shocking" to see blood if it's not in color).
Are you joking?? Is that why the majority of the very most brilliant and promising American students become Rhodes Scholars and attend Oxford. This is one of the most moronic comments I think I've ever read at IMDb, and that's saying something.
What? Where is the English Citizen Kane? Take your pick from any Hitchcock films, he pretty much created a new genre of film, or at the very least drastically modernized one.
When you look at the the relative size of the UK compared to the US yet how many incredible actors, actresses, directors, cinematographers, film composers, etc. it's produced, it's obvious that it's a cinematic hub brilliance, it makes your comments look a little stupid.
Due to history the US film making industry has money. An *awful lot of money*. However a lot of the talent comes from this side of the pond. The sad fact is there are economies of scale in film making just like any other industry. A small island will not compete with a large continent. But look at the movies and you'll find Brits actors, Brits on the crew, Brit production, Brit direction and so on.
Grindhouse cinema is a uniquely American phenomena. Its not something we got so we were looking forward to a taste of Americana. I know in a lot of cases the American market is the main market for a movie I do feel we get short changed though. Why does the UK have to wait for movies, get second best, wait a year for a TV show and so on. Its not like we don't speak the same language (almost). Well in the case of Grindhouse I wanted an experience. In the end I waited for the individual movies to come out on DVD and watched them at home losing the movie company at least one sale.
You've got to be kidding me. I used to work in the service industry and would absolutely dread having to deal with French people, and if I tried to be friendly and use Quebecois accented French with them they'd even treat me more contemptuously. I without exaggeration have never met a person from France that wasn't incredibly rude, not a single one. Maybe it's just with service staff that they act that way, or because they erroneously thought I was American. When I travelled to France, although it was petty, inside I thought, finally, if not my chance to be rude back at least I won't be treated so boorishly. But then I found even service staff in France look down on anyone non-French, I thought, when the f$$k is it my turn? Shudder.
Sorry Dale, I love America and Americans, but they are second to none in both arrogance and superiority complexes, even ones who have accomplished absolutely nothing of worth in their own lives, all they need to do is loudly and mindlessly chant, USA! USA! USA! and they're instantly the kings and queens of the universe. It's kind of sad when you think about it. America used to be first in the world at everything, but pretty much the only exceptional export they have anymore is their culture; films, television, music, etc., and a lot of that is consumed world-wide more in the nature of people going to a zoo than anything else.
I know it's not the average American's fault because of the woefully lack of awareness of your own country's foreign policy, but the States, rightly or wrongly, interfered with the internal affairs of almost every country on Earth during the Cold War, feeling justified because any means was worth the ends of containing Communism. But in the meantime, millions of people world-wide suffered under totalitarian regimes either created by CIA sponsored coups, or existing ones that only continued to exist due to American sponsorship.
None of you really shouldn't be at all surprised when America is so hated by wide swaths of the planet, like Central and South America, the Middle East, etc., and in fact more enlightened and informed Americans I meet actually have more conciliatory attitudes similar to the Germans after the Second World War, they acknowledge and apologize for the immense suffering America has inflicted, and they work at doing what they can from it continuing.
So to summarize Greg, you're saying Americans are second to none in both arrogance and superiority complexes, and they apologize for the immense suffering America has inflicted, and they work at doing what they can from it continuing. Makes total sense.
You're assuming that if the movie had been released in the UK first, nobody there would have made the same mistake. I freely admit that many Americans are woefully stupid. But we don't have a monopoly on stupid.
The films were split-up becasue there are other countries (such as North America) that have never heard of a double-feature, so the concept was lost on them.
Why they still split them up here is anyone's guess.
They split them up because the central concept of the movie--the double feature concept--failed at the box office, and the Weinsteins were having a string of flops, so they panicked and tried something different to recoup their investment. A 3 and a half hour zombie/retro-car epic might sound delicious to you and I, but to the average moviegoer, it holds little interest. Many friends of mine who are fans of Tarantino and Rodriguez wouldn't see the movies based on the poster alone--McGowan with the machine gun leg. That, of course, was what sold it for me. But it was the kiss of death at the box office. I wonder if the movies have made back their money on DVD? I've seen both the separate versions and the individual releases, and I have to say the "Grindhouse" experience is definitely preferable.
The directors promised the cinematic experience of the double feature and false trailers between and didn't deliver... blame them and their studios, not the fans who didn't know this.
Well you're not so bright for spreading urban legends.. the original marketing plan was to split the movies up when it went international. I saw the movie in the US upon release three times at the theater, the attendance was the same during Death Proof as it was during Planet Terror during all of them
Nobody was walking out, and if they did it wasn't enough to be noticeable
It sucks that some of us in the U.S. get labeled as stupid. I will admit there are a lot of white trash morons in our country, but there are those who steer clear of them and I'm pretty sure that the majority of great films were made by americans so if you want to talk sh@t then make a film of your own and see what happens.
The movie was split up for some theaters overseas, because most non-English speaking countries might not understand the tradition behind the "grindhouse" double-feature and the underlying concept might be lost. The two movies were called: "Grindhouse: Planet Terror" and "Grindhouse: Death Proof".
"Mere words cannot even begin to describe the warm, glowing joy that I feel knowing that a scone-swilling shítbag like you was forced to see these flicks separately"
Erm, I'm pretty sure he just downloaded it like most people in the UK. Oh, there was the UK theatrical tour too. I enjoyed that!
If they really wanna recoup the money, bring out the boxset.
